The Texas Jewish mother
should be proud that her
children have chosen to
honor the traditions of the
Jewish faith. Like Ezekiel's'
vision of the Valley of the
' Bones, they have raised
themselves from lifeless
ashes to give glory to the
name of God. The mother
should try to encourage
them as much as she can —
in the- true spirit of a Yid-

Ann Landers

• Syndicated columnist
Ann Landers recently took
it upon herself (in the De-
troit Free Press) to respond
to a distraught Texas
Jewish mother who com-
plained bitterly that her son
and daughter-in-law had
become Orthodox Jews and,
because they were now fully
observant -of the dietary
laws, refused to eat in her
non-kosher home. The
mother decries the fact that
kosher food gives her indi-
gestion and, being in their
70s, she and her husband
are too old to change their
eating habits.
Ms. Landers, full of sym-
pathy with her correspon-
dent, seizes on the opportu-
nity to challenge the
validity and pertinence of
Jewish Law, and intimates
that the neophyte Orthodox
might be violating a higher
law than the dietary code,
namely, "Honor thy father
and thy mother."
Ms. Landers says, "All
those dietary laws were
written thousands of years
ago before refrigeration.
They made a great deal of
sense in those days ...
Adhering: to such strict
dietary laws in this day and
age does not seem logical,
but tradition does have
value and should be given
some consideration." .. .
First of all, Divine Law is
not restricted to a time cap-
sule; it does not have an ex-
piration date. Besides, the
dietary laws have abso-
lutely nothing t6 do with re-
frigeration. The command-
ments concerning permit-
ted and forbidden foods
were instituted to embrace
the principle of sacrifice and
forebearance which is cen-
tral to the Jewish faith.
As for the commandment
to honor one's parents
(which is the fifth of the Ten
Commandments, not the
' fourth); this is not an abso-
lute, but a conditional
commandment, as any stu-
dent of the Scriptures would
verify ...
The fifth commandment
is conditional. Parents are
to be respected wheh they
raise their children in the
ways of Torah. If they urge
their children to violate the
laws of God, out of some
misdirected self-serving in-
dulgence, they disqualify
themselves and de'serve no
respect.
