GRAMMY - NOMI- NATED Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band brings its world- acclaimed virtuosity to the PJazz stage on terrace of Hotel Pontchartrain, Aug. 6 . . . Spyro Gyra, who always breaks attendance records at P`Jazz, returns from a tour of Japan to continue that tradition on Aug.8. The Akiyoshi/Tabackin Big Band has topped Downbeat's Readers' Poll five times in the big band category during its 11-year existence . . . In 1983, leader/ keyboardist Akiyoshi was voted best composer and arranger in both the readers' poll and the Downbeat international jazz critics poll. The band's music, corn- posed and arranged primar- ily by Akiyoshi with hus- band and flutist/ saxophonist Lew Tabackin, is blues oriented with a melodic style that gives much latitude to her soloists . . . Hallmarks of their per- formances are the unusual and intricate arrangements plus outstanding work done by each soloist. Spyro Gyra, the jazz fu- sion band named, as a joke, after a single-celled algae that grows in stagnant pools of water, released its first live album earlier this year . It is one of the top con- temporary jazz bands in the country . . . with Spyro Gyra best known for its diverse blend of musical styles and Latin jazz sound. Gallery holds art exhibit The I.
