▪ • , THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS I 7 DELI-RESTAURANT a s b j LOOKING FOR A SPECIAL PLACE by vocalist Sheila Landis jazz trio . . . who returns again this Wednesday . . . with her soft melodious strains of "What's New," "As Time Goes By," "Am I Blue?," "Let's Get Away From It All" ... backed by bass guitar and electric guitar. NANCY GURWIN Productions, in conjunction with Komedy Players Dinner Theater at Allen Park Motor Lodge on South- field Rd. in Allen Park, re- cently held auditions for all roles in The Odd Couple .. . Neil Simon's rib tickling comedy opens Sept. 22, with cocktails at 6:30, dinner at 7:30 and show at 8:45 .. . every Friday and Saturday evening. Upcoming auditions will be announced in September for a December opening of the musical Anything Goes starring Nancy Gurwin. EXCALIBUR restau- rant nitery, Franklin Rd. and Northwestern, was re- cent scene of an afternoon fresh fish exhibition .. . with interested visitors, in- cluding chefs and waiters, gathered in the kitchen to witness a choice presenta- tion . . . and drink white bordeaux wine. Roy Phillips of Salasnek Fisheries displayed fish, vegetables and herbs im- ported from Europe . . . Dover sole, turbot, plaice, brille, langoustines, sal- mon, trout, frog legs, sea bass, Irish sea scallops with roe, and others ... Big hit were the salty natural sea beans. Chef Marty Wilk of Ex- calibur and Chef Jimmy Lehane of Nicky's in Troy prepared a tasteful display for all to partake and enjoy . It is quite evident that the overnight delivery from Europe makes so very much of a difference . . . Chef Marty Wilk, whose Ex- calibur is known to buy the finest and freshest, thinks it's fantastic that such a variety is now available from overseas ... and just half-a-day away. Marty, by the way, drew many double-takes from his chef friends . . . He has taken off over 60 pounds... What did it? . . . Eating a lot of fish, he says. IT'S ANNIVERSARY number one for Sero's on Northwestern, north of 12 Mile . .. which opened July 29, 1983, to big lines .. . Only things that have changed are better food, so math better service and larger variety. Name Sero's has been a restaurant stalwart since 1914 . .. with more than a few folks remembering the one on Griswold. The Sero's on Northwest- ern has also gotten to be a get-together spot for many. QUESTION COMES that if Orange Roughy is such a popular fish these days, why the all-of-a- sudden demand . . . Reason for its so-called long-time secrecy is because the New Zealand-ite is a deep-sea resident . . . living in waters over 3,000 feet down . . . Commercial gear has only recently been developed to economically reach and pull them in . . . Orange Roughy has a pearly white meaeand when broiled, presents a de- licate, very mild dinner entree. THERE WAS A PART of greatness waiting on us during recent visit to Le Bordeaux, Six Mile west of Middlebelt . . . She was Dawn Goldkette, great- niece of the late, famous Jean Goldkette . . . or- chestra leader supreme, to whom so many top names in the musical world gave cre- dit for their start. Jean played in many of America's most beautiful rooms, but he would have to say that grandniece Dawn is also working in gorgeous surroundings ... The former Vargo's now has silver corrugated steel and beautiful paintings on the walls, glass mirrors around edge of dark, stipled ceiling with its whirling fans, hanging glass shades for lights over booth tables, silk flowers in dainty vases, large padded booths, gray walls with red napkins on beautiful gray sheer tablec- loths that look like patterns . . . above an under tablec- loth of red. And certainly Jean would have given his highest ap- proval for the music by Billy Rose Quartet, Tuesday through Saturday, with Chris Rose on drums, Rudy Golde, bass, and Billy "Fly- ing Fingers" Marr on piano . . . a very well-balanced group ... for joyous listen- ing and dancing . . . to "Just In Time," "Satin Doll," "Feelings," "Is Everything Alright" in Latin beat, "Hello," "For Once In My Life" and one and on in a huge repertoire . . . Billy Marr at the piano is prob- ably among the region's finest keyboard artists . .. a Mischa Kottler student. Le Bordeaux owners now are Bona and Mike Stoyanovich . at the spot which was Vargo's and then Bossio's for a short while . . . Three rooms seat 280 .. . main dining room 100, lounge area and bar 80, banquet sector 100 . . . opened May 23 of this year. Tony Syracki is head chef at Le Bordeaux ... making his own sauces, pastries and desserts among other kitchen delights ... Bread is made fresh every hour... and Tony makes a different soup each day plus standard minestrone and French onion . . . Even its own Ita- lian sausage is made at Le Bordeaux, a French-Italian cuisine restaurant. Dawn brought us cream of mushroom soup with a lot of body to its tastiness, . creamy and certainly not Continued on next.page .
