THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS "You Are Just A Stone's Throw. From The Best Deal!" Fred Stone see Sales & Leasing Historians give Truman high marks as President Jerusalem — Though scorned by many in his own time, Harry S. Truman ranks near the top among American presidents in the opinion of American histo- rians, an American scholar said here last month during a conference at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem marking the centennial of Truman s birth. Speaking on The Truman Presidency: An Historical Perspective at the Univer- sity's Harry S. Truman Re- search Institute for the Ad- vancement of Peace, Prof. William E. Leuchtenberg said that a phenomenon of "Trumania" developed in the United States in the 1970s as Americans came to realize Truman's outstand- ing character traits and achievements. His direct- ness, courage and integrity became treasured char- acteristics in the post- Watergate era, said Leuchtenberg, who is a pro- fessor of history at the Uni- versity of North Carolina and the author of a number of books on American and world history. Prof. Leuchtenberg noted that "they're all wild about Harry now," but that "in his own time, Truman was an object of scorn" and sank to the lowest approval rating — 23% in one poll — ever given to an American President. Yet, he said, most American historians have given Truman a con- sistently high rating and place him eighth on the list of the greatest American residents, defining him as "near great." "He led the country through an extraordinary succession of events at the end of the war (World War II) and the period of rebuil- ing," said Leuchtenberg, who listed to Truman's cre- dit such achievements as the Berlin airlift, the Mar- shall plan, the unification of the armed forces, the "Fair Deal," and the effort to eliminate racial discrimi- nation. As for Truman's re- lations with the Jewish people and the State of Is- rael, Leuchtenberg said "there can be no doubt that he sympathized with and abated the Zionist cause." Leuchtenberg noted, too, that Truman succeeded in getting Congress to admit 41,000 refugees to the U.S. after the war, two-thirds of whom were Jews. In opening remarks, Prof. Zvi Schifflin, academic chairman of the Truman In- stitute, said that during Truman's presidency, the American people "grossly underestimated his capacity for leadership; we are highly indebted to him." Anti-Catholic cult cited as anti-Semitic in ADL report New York — The mul- timillion dollar operations of the Tony and Susan Alamo Christian Founda- tion, an evangelical cult re- sponsible for the spreading of anti-Catholic propaganda across the nation, including Michigan, were detailed in a report issued by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rit'h earlier this month. Since May of this year, the Alamo '-Foundation has distributed anti-Catholic leaflets titled "The Pope's Secrets," containing what the report describes as "pre- posterous and obscene alle- gations." The report states that in- addition to its anti-Catholic campaign, the Alamo Foundation has also dis- seminated propaganda re- flecting anti-Semitism. Prior to the leaflets, un- signed anti-Catholic posters — pasted to church walls and property, stores, utility poles and car windshields — began to appear across the nation in February of this year. The materials were found in Detroit, Ann Arbor and Flint in May and June. In. early 1983, the ADL report, says, the foundation. placed long discourses by Tony Alamo as ads in sev- eral newspapers. Although Alamo denies being anti- Semitic, the ads quoted pas- . sages from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the turn-of-the-century, anti- Semitic Czarist publication. Tony Alamo, 49, and his wife, Susan, who died in 1982, gave up careers in show business to found their Christian foundation in Caliornia in 1966. They began by preaching the tenets of the "Jesus move- ment," handing out Bibles from paper bags. As the movement grew, the found- ation moved its operations to Arkansas in the mid- 1970s. According to the report, the cult operates "churches" in five states and claims to have "missionaries" all over Europe. * lamo Foundation The A has remained vocal by at- tacking a variety of targets, including the Internal Revenue Service and the Equal Rights Amendment. The foundation has also been the subject of various law suits brought by par- ents of some cult members..
