Jerusalem (JTA) — Is-
raeli leaders attended a
sound and light ceremony
on Mount Herzl in
Jerusalem last week, mark-
ing the 80th anniversary of
the death of Theodor Herzl,
the founder of modern
Zionism.
The ceremony was
attended by Prime Minister
Yitzhak Shamir, President
Chaim Herzog and Jewish
Agency Chairman Leon
Dulzin.
Herzog said that an ethi-
cal society and peace must
be established in Israel, be-
cause as they are the pillars
of Zionist belief. He said
that Zionism was not meant
to be a fighting movement,
but that it had been forced
to defend itself from
enemies.

Publisher cuts
false discription
of Nazi aide
Dallas — An 11-word
passage implying that a
Jewish man was among
those executed for war
crimes at Nuremberg in
1946 has been ordered cut
from future editions of
William Styron's best-
selling novel, Sophie's
Choice, according to the
Dallas Morning News.
The phrase, "a Jew,
mirabile dictu — though
few at the time knew it," is
used by Styron to describe
lawyer Hans Frank, a close
and long-time associate of
Adolph Hitler and Ger-
many's governor-general
for occupied Poland during
World War II. Subsequent
research has revealed that
Frank, despite his Jewish-
sounding name, was not
Jewish.
The error is on page 249
in the 1983 Bantam paper-
back edition of Sophie's
Choice, which was issued
following the release of the
film based on Styron's
novel. Both Bantam and
Random House, the pub-
lisher of the hardcover orig-
inal, will drop the phrase
from nw editions of the
book.
