Afternoon sessions at the com- puter camp are devoted to elementary-age hackers, providing them with the opportunity to become acquainted with computers and learn basic computer operations. Under the tutelage of Virginia Kirk and Eric Horvitz, junior high school stu- dents spend the morning taking classes in computer programming, paving their way for further com- puter education during the school year. . The introduction of high-tech op- tions for day campers has not been accomplished at the expense of more traditional camp activities. Arts and crafts and swimming still play prom- inent roles at the JCC. Whether campers choose the full • or half-day program, the Center day camp offers a wide range of social, athletic and artistic activities for every age group. To implement their activities, the camp offers extensive recreationl facilities, including arts and crafts centers, a 120-acre nature center, and an amphitheater for performing arts productions. This year, the Cen- ter has added boating facilities on the premises. . The Active Adults program for senior citizens is another new pro- gram at the JCC. Scheduled activi- ties include a senior fitness class, water exercise, yoga classes and Fri 7 day Ongei Shabbat. Julie Silver, coordinator of the program, is confident of its success. "It is a new program and it's kind of slow, but it is geting better," she said regarding attendance. Participating seniors do not con- fine their activities to the Center it- self. Travel plans for the summer also include picnic outings and a trip to the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Unlike other summer events at the JCC, the Active Adults program will continue into the fall, with ex- panded activities in the planning stages. In addition to its special summer activities, the Center continues to offer its year-round services such as health club and gym facilities, swimming, racquetball and other extra-curricular programs, during summer hours. From toddlers to seniors, Detroit-area Jews will find the JCC a source of summer-time fun. : Technion awards Harvey Prize to two Haifa — Dr. Peter Soro- research in lasers and quan- kin of IBM's T.
