many fields. Its research staff numbers about
1,000, including 400 students writing Ph.D. and
other theses.
They work in five faculties (mathematics,
physics, chemistry, biophysics and biochemistry,
and biology) subdivided into 22 research depart-
ments.
Many applied projects accompany the basic
research.
Israel Pecht outlined in Berlin another exam-
ple of immunological research. He has found out
how cromoglicinic acid, a well-known asthma
remedy, works.
His work is not just a contribution toward
basic research into allergies. It may also lead to
the development of better and more easily usable
drugs to treat allergies.
Scientific contacts between Israel and the
Federal Republic began years before political ties
were established, although where Israel is con-
cerned it is difficult to draw a dividing line be-
tween the two.
Chaim Weizmann said research was the Jews'
most powerful weapon. He himself was both a
leading Zionist and a well-knOwn chemist and
microbiologist.
In 1902 he advocated a Jewish university as
the nucleus of the state of Israel he envisaged. He
was not only the founder of the research center in
Rehovot that now bears his name but a founding
father and first head of state of Israel.
A later Israeli president, Ephraim Katzir, was
also a research scientist at the Weizmann Insti-
tute. While he was in office he held monthly meet-
ings of decision-makers, industrial and political,
at Rehovot.
These gatherings were never attended by
more than 25 to 30 people but informally they
were a highly successful means of coordinating
science policy.
That was a detail from the speech made in
Berlin on behalf of Shalheveth Freier. He was
unable to attend in person, so Ekkehard Mauerer
read parts of it for him.
Freier noted that the state of Israel was based
on the Jewish tradition that learning, research
and knowledge are part of the characteristics of
the Jewish people and "the source of their na-
tional pride."

It is a small country almost entirely lacking in
natural resources, but Israel has certainly
realized that science is crucial if it is to survive.
Hopefully, the joint Weizmann Institute - Germar
Federal Republic scientific projects will fulfill their inten
tions, for the benefit of both nations and for humanity, fo]
the elevation of academic scholarship.
The new relationshii
between Israel and Ger
many, on .a scientific basis
keeps calling attention t(
the importance of the
Weizmann Institute, not ft)]
Israel alone but for th(
entire scientific world
While granting recognitior
to the tasks pursued by sci
entists in Rehovot, the 50t1
anniversary of the Weiz
mann Institute perpetuate:
the name of the eminent
scientist who establishes
the great center for learninf
and teaching. It keeps alive
the .name of the institute':
ChainWeizmann
founder, Dr. Chaim Weiz
mann, under whose leadership in the Zionist movement the
common cement tor JeWish statehood was in the Balfoin
Declaration, which- was issued Nov.. 2, "1917 mainly as E
resultof his friendship with Great Britain's Foreign Secre
tary Arthur James Balfour.
While recording the Weizmann Institute anniversary
appreciation should, be indicated on a local basis for ar
important project which was fulfilled only some weeks ag(
by the Metropolitan Detroit Jewish community in the es
tablishment of the professorial chair in applied math-
ematics. It was realized as an honor for Paul and Marlen(
Borman, whose identification with the Weizmann Institut(
has been an asset to the scientific research efforts in Israel
Thus, the recognition of the important institute in Rehovoi
lEeep assuming worldwide interest.,
