Hungarian Jewish community shows
remarkable courage, commitment
BY MARC H. TANENBAUM
some 800,000 Jews, Hun-
gary has the second largest
Jewish population in East-
ern Europe next to the .
Soviet Union. Thanks to its
well-organized Jewish
community and the limited
freedoms provided by the
government, Hungarian
Jewry has become the
pivotal resource for helping
smaller Jewish com-
munities in the Eastern bloc
meet their religious, educa-
tional and cultural needs.
According to Dr.
Scheiber, there are 20 rab-
binical students now train-
ing in Budapest, 10 of them
coming from Russia,
Czechoslovakia, and Bul-
garia.
Hungary does not allow
its citizens to emigrate, and
very few Jews are allowed to
leave for Israel. Nor are
rabbis allowed to refer to Is-
rael in their sermons.
Ambiguous as this Com-
munist freedom is, I cannot
but help admire the courage
and commitment of Hunga-
rian Jews. Despite the ter-
rible destruction they have
suffered under the Nazis,
they have succeeded in
creating a viable spiritual
Jewish life for themselves
as well as for others.

Earlier this month, I
made my first visit to
Budapest, Hungary. With
its majestic imperial palace
and modern hotels over-
looking the placid Danube
River, it is one of the most
interesting cities of the
European continent.
It interested me as an
American because of the
cunning compromise that
Hungarian communism has
achieved with the Soviet
Union. Janos Kadar's gov-
ernment has given Hun-
gary the internal freedom to
practice capitalism and free
enterprise, side by side with
state communism. That mix
has given it the most prod-
uctive economy in Eastern
Europe.
Hungary is also espe-
cially interesting in terms
of its Jewish community.
Miring my visit here, I met
with two leaders of the or-
ganized Jewish community,
Imre Haber and Mrs. Geza
Seifert, and Dr. Alexander
Scheiber, president of the
Rabbinical Seminary.
