"I want to say to the Arabs — your fathers helped put us (American blacks) in this condition. "I say to the Jews — your fathers helped put black people in this condition. "I say to Africa — some of our own people helped put us in this condition. "Europe and America — they were all in a conspiracy to destroy a people." "I am saying to the Jewish people, God chose you to be a light to the Gen- tiles and you failed your re- sponsibility. (And) God took the sceptre away from the children of Israel and gave it to the children of the pro- phet Ishmael." But according to Far- rakhan, even the Arabs fumbled the job. And now it is someone else's turn, be- cause "God has always cho- sen a people." • ASTREINS Fresh Water Pearls Gold and Diamond Earrings 14kt Chains and Bracelets Colored Stone Rings and Pendants 14kt Wedding Bands Cultured Pearls Diamond Bracelets Biwa Pearl Rings and Pendants Loose Diamonds Colored Stone Rings Diamond Necklaces Men's Gold and Diamond Rings Diamond Engagement Rings 14kt Diamond Pendants 120 W. David Lebenbom, president, and Alvin Kush- ner of the Jewish Commu- nity Council of Metropoli- tan Detroit, and Richard Lobenthal, Michigan regional director of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, were asked by The Jewish News to com- ment on Farrakhan's speech. Lebenbom said, "The (Jewish Community) Coun- cil had hoped that the Rev. Farrakhan would follow in the footsteps of the Rev. Jesse Jackson so as to con- tinue the national healing process to mend the rift be- tween blacks and Jews. "Fortunately, the spirit of cooperation between the black and Jewish com- munities in Detroit, which has existed for many years, remains strong and healthy. We would hope that the Detroit spirit will serve as a model for those who would seek to do other than strengthen our na- tion's commitment to reli- gious freedom and tolerance." Asked how he felt the De- troit Jewish community should respond to Far- rakhan's remarks, Council Executive Director Al Kushner said, "You can never ignore anti- Semitism. It has to be dealt with and it has to be re- sponded to," adding, "The response lies in establishing better relations in the inter-ethnic community so that Farrakhan and his bigotry will carry little or no weight. "It is a case of reminding the public, the general pub- lic as well as the Jewish community, that such forces have to be dealt with." Lobenthal said, "Far- rakhan distinguished him- self once again as a premier anti-Semite." Ih response to Far- rakhan's charge that Jews were responsible for out- rages ranging from high rents to blacks, to Vanessa Williams losing her Miss America crown, Lobenthal said the Black Muslim leader "engaged in patently absurd and anti-Semitic rhetoric before an all-black audience. He singled out Jews for criticism he didn't dare level at Christians or Moslems." Before the Jewish com- munity reacts to such re- marks, Lobenthal cautioned, they must re- member that "the guy (Far- rakhan) only has about 10,000 followers out of 20 million blacks in the United States and he doesn't repre- sent anything but a splinter faction, who before Jesse Jackson's (Presidential) candidacy, wasn't even heard of in the black com- munity." . Chasidic Jews determined eligible for SBA loans New York — The Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith hailed proposed regu- lations issued last month by the U.S. Department of Commerce that include Chasidic Jews as eligible for small-business loans to dis- advantaged groups. The regulations formalize pro- cedures for determining eligibility. Nathan Perlmutter, ADL's national director, said the new regulations "correct an inequity in which Chasidic jews had been discriminated against, despite their difficult eco- circumstances nomic stemming from religious be- liefs and customs." The proposed regulations reaffirm a 1974 finding by the Commerce Department that Chasidic Jews are so- cially and economically dis- advantaged and as such are eligible for assistance to minority businesses. The proposed regulations will be finalized ^ger the Commerce Depa, ant has the opportunity to hear and evaluate comments from in- terested groups.
