Olympic volleyball coach has Maccabiah background BY HASKELL COHEN Followers of the U.S. Maccabiah teams, over the past 15-20 years will find that the name Douglas Beal is a familiar one. Beal was a star performer with the 1969 and 1973 U.S. Mac- cabiah volleyball teams and now is asserting himself as a top-flight coach. After completing his playing career, Beal was named the head coach of the USA men's national vol- leyball program. Prior to having assumed the leadership of the U.S. volleyball program, Beal served as the men's junior national team coach for the first Junior North Ameri- can Zone Championships which were held in Mexico during the summer of 1976. As the coach of the Dayton, Ohio-based U.S.A. Men's Volleyball program from 1976-1980, Beal coached the U.S. team to its first vic- tories over such powerhouse teams as Japan and Poland. He was rehired as the head coach of the Men's National Team in 1980 and will di- rect the American team through the 1984 summer games in Los Angeles. Beal latched on as the head volleyball coach at Bowling Green State Uni- versity in 1971 and re- turned to his Alma Mater in Columbus, Ohio to coach Ohio State, from 1972-1974. During that period, he was instrumental in establish- ing a strong Ohio State men's volleyball tradition and twice was selected as "Midwest Coach of the Year." From 1970 to 1976, Beal served as a member of the U.S.A. Men's National Vol- leyball Team and had the distinction of having played in more international matches than any plaYer in U.S. volleyball history. Among his world class cre- dentials are participation in two world championships, two sets of Pan-American Games, four North Ameri- can Zone Championships and, in addition to his selec- tion to the Maccabiah teams, he was picked three times for the U.S. Olympic squad. His playing career was highlighted by five All-American selections and an MVP award during the 1975 U.S. Volleyball Association National Championships.
