American cantors research
history, establish archives

New York — The Cantors
Assembly — the world's
largest body of hazzanim —
has been awarded a
$160,000 grant by the Na-
tional Endowment for the
Humanities to publish the
first comprehensive history
of the cantorate in Anierica,
it was announced last week
by Cantor Samuel Rosen-
baum, executive vice
president of the assembly.
The study will assess the
changing roles of the cantor
as an individual function-
ing within the community,
the changing nature of the
cantorate as an institution
and changes in the music
and liturgy that form the
art of the cantor. It will
examine the cantor's his-
toric role in preserving tra-
ditional Jewish culture and
adapting it to its surround-
ings against the back-
ground of 300 years of
Jewish life in America.
A by-product of the re-
search, Cantor Rosenbaum

noted, will be the estab-
lishment of an archive, in
conjunction with the
American Jewish Historical
SOciety, to house the
memorabilia of present and
former cantors quoted in the
study.
Commenting on the sig-
nificance of the study, Can-
tor Ivan E. Perlman,
president of the assembly,
said: "While the rabbi is the
head of the synagogue, the
cantor, through his mastery
of Jewish liturgy and music,
is its heart."

Sports event
for disabled

Following a week of
sports competition for
handicapped patients at
William Beaumont Hospi-
tal, a day of community
events will be held at the
hospital July 28, beginning
at noon.
