THRU SAT. Haifa — Technion's Fa- culty of Aeronautical Engineering has developed a flight simulator designed to help find ways of neut- ralizing the effect of the shocks and vibrations pilots are subject to at critical times. Shmuel Professor Merhav, head of the re- search team, said this week that modern airplanes are subject to strong shocks and vibrations especially when landing, particularly on the deck of a ship, just when maximal precision is re- quired of the pilot. These shocks are characteristic of planes and helicopters as well as-the tanks and ships. While it is impossible to prevent them, their nega- tive effect on the pilot can be considerably reduced. Merhav explained that these movements , are strongly felt by the pilot and badly effect his sight and operational shuttle Colum- bia was affected by such movements during one landing, and on some occa- sions they have caused acci- dents and even crashes. In the Technion trials a computer is programmed to "absorb" the vibrations, leaving the pilot unaffected. Pilots who have tried the simulator were impressed by its performance.
