These are the symbols I'm doing well and most of the time people are polite. Sure there are times I'm in a bad mood, when I'd like to go out and buy my lox and bagels and my hair's messed up and if I weren't a sportscaster I wouldn't worry about it. But the price you pay for notori- ety is small in the large picture. When people ask for an autograph I'm flattered, and it isn't hard to think back to when no one wanted my autograph. As long as you keep it in the perspective that they're basically admiring me as a sportscaster, what it says about me as a person is really insignificant. I don't really think you could enjoy fame or success if you took it too seriously. Are the media people in Detroit pretty approachable or do they carry a god-like attitude off-camera? I think a lot of people carry a god-like attitude as a defense. I know I walk through Tiger Stadium and people scream my name. ,Now what should I do? I totally ignorq them. If someone approaches me nicely and I can't avoid it, fine. XOU almost have to become a little bit aloof and reclu- sive and many times people will get. "The mobility is a realty of my business. I've really been sheltered in that I've been in the business ten years and haven't been fired yet." the wrong impression but there's nothing I can do about that. The people I know at - Channel 4 are as unaffected by media success, as you can imagine. I think most of us have been around long enough to now that we can be out on the streets tomorrow and no matter how great and neces- sary I think I am, if I were to leave, people would miss me for a few weeks, but I'd be gone faster than you can imagine. I think lost people realize that if you get too carried away, it's only going to cost you in the long run._ When you were starting out, what made you feel you had something different to offer sportscasting? Mainly because people told me I did. People said I was good and they liked the way I didn't just rattle off the scores. The feedback I got at first encouraged me to develop a style. I didn't get into it by pounding on • doors, but by being told• "Why don't you do this for me." I didn't feel I had to follow a certain arrow path and do it "the right way." I found success from the beginning in putting my thoughts down and having opinions. I want to go out of my way to keep this identification I was a little outrageous and one sided and it worked. Sports is not like news. It isn't life and death and sports fans like that. It's fun to debate and have opin- ions and it's always right for debate because it's really kind of the toy de- partment, not the serious side of life. I always wanted to distinguish my- self and stimulate people, even if I stated an opinion they disagreed with if it was done responsibly and with a little pizzazz. That's what Al Ackerman found success at, but he was a little more negative than I want to be. But love him or hate him, he was watched more than anyone and that's the bottom line. I think my voice has helped. It's unique and a calling card, especially on radio. Do you have a good relationship with Al Ackerman, although many people see you as a threat to him? I really don't know what the forces have been in Al's career or why the station makes the decisions it makes. I don't believe that Al has looked at me as someone who is out to do him in, because I'm not. In fact I've gone on record and I'll stay on record as saying I don't want to do the 11 o'clock news. That's a decision that was made by the station. I would rather be home with my family and he knows that. We have maintained a good professional relationship and Al was instrumental in getting me the job there and I appreciate that. We come in every day, crack a few jokes and divide things up and that's that. There are people, and I won't mention names, who I've had a har- der time working with at Channel 4. Al isn't one of them. How deep are your roots here? How badly would you feel if you gOt a great offer from L.A. tomorrow? The mobility is a reality of my
