finger at police.
Jerusalem (JTA) —,The
lawyer defending Yona Av--
rushmi, the alleged grenade
slayer of Peace Now activist
Emil Grunzweig in Feb.
1983, claimed in Jerusalem
district court earlier this
month that his client was an
innocent victim of police
scapegoating and contended
that the real killer was
Amos Schengalov who
turned states evidence and
was a key witness against
Avrushmi.
According to defense at-
torney Itamar Hacohen, the
police seized Avrushmi to
cover up their own failure,
after more than a year, to
apprehend the guilty party.
No concrete evidence
links Avrushmi to the crime
and the prosecution has of-
fered nothing to support the
charge that Avrushmi
threw the fatal grenade, the
lawyer contended.

Day school
walkout ends
Montreal (JTA) One of
the costliest, longest and
most complieated labor
struggles between teachers
and management in three
Jewish day schools in
Montreal, involving a
five-week lockout of 325
teachers in the Hebrew de-
partments of the schools,
has been settled with a new
two-year contract.
Some 4,000 elementary
and high school students in
the three day schools have
been unable to attend since
April 25. Teachers in the
non-Hebrew departments
were not involved in the
labor dispute but could not
teach under the lock-out
circumstances.

DC conference
for Holocaust
rescuers slated
New York (JTA) — An
unprecedented interna-
tional conference on re-
scuers of Jews in Europe
during the Holocaust, spon-
sored by the U.S., Holocaust
Memorial Council, has been
slated for Sept. 17-19 in
Washington. Some 500
scholars, survivors and
their rescuers, from North
America, Europe and Israel,
are expected to participate
in the gathering.
The conference, titled
"Faith in Humankind: Re-
scuers of Jews During the
Holocaust," is to bring to-
gether rescuers and those
they saved "to bear witness
to what has been done and
to what could have been
done to help Jews during
the Holocaust," according to
Dr. Carol Rittner of Detroit,
a Catholic nun who is the
conference's coordinator.
