Israeli rabbis
seek advice
on new methods

New York — A Group of
American rabbis left for Is-
rael earlier this month to
help train Israeli rabbis in
reaching the non-religious
Jews in Israel, by establish-
ing adult education groups,
youth groups and special
Sabbath programs.
The rabbis are part of the
Rabbinical Council of
America's Israel Leader-
ship conference. The confer-
ence will feature a meeting
with the chief rabbis of Is-
rael to set up the training
program.
Each of the 200 Ameri-
cans will meet with his
counterpart in Israel on a
one-to-one basis for imple-
menting the new programs.
The American rabbis
have said that many Israeli
rabbis think of the role of
the rabbi in a traditional
manner on such matters as
kashrut, marriage and di-
vorce and Jewish courts.
The Israeli rabbis realize
that new techniques are
needed, according to the
American leaders.
The conference will also
involve meetings with
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir, Jerusalem mayor,
Teddy Kollek and President
Chaim Herzog.

Committee set
to aid Falashas

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Cabinet decided earlier
this month to establish a
committee consisting of the
directors general of various
ministries to coordinate the
absorption of Jewish im-
migrants from Ethiopia —
Falashas. The committee
will also include the heads
of the Jewish Agency's aliya
and finance departments
and youth aliya.
Its task will be to elimi-
nate as much as possible of
the red tape that clogs the
bureaucratic process for
Ethiopian newcomers and
to coordinate the activities
of the ministries and agen-
cies that deal with them.

Navon is choice
in election poll

Jerusalem (ZINS) —
Nearly 30 percent of Israel's
population would like to see
former President Yitzhak
Navon in the prime
minister's office, according
to a recent survey by the
Pori Institute.
Navon, who is not an
active candidate for the post
in this month's election,
nonetheless was the choice
of 29.8 percent of those pol-
led. The former president
received more than twice
the support of his closest
rival in the survey, Yitzhak
Shamir, who collected 12.5
percent of the vote.
