This year's Democratic Party Platform, moreover, includes a down-the-line statement of support for Israel. Ferraro, addressing the World Affairs Council in San Francisco last week, declared: "In the Middle East, we will reaffirm that support for Is- rael is a moral issue. We will rescue Camp David from the scrap-heap, and we will substitute that quest for peace for the policy of increasing arms shipments to the sworn enemies of our sole democratic ally in the region. To ship Stinger missiles to the terrorist-plagued Middle East is too close to throwing a lighted match into the world's gas tank." Mondale's close associates suggested this week that he was largely unaware of Lance's Arab- related activities of recent years. The Mondale people saw the Lance appointment, they said, strictly as an opportunity to strengthen the Democratic ticket in the South, where Lance is still inf- luential. Most recently, Lance has served as the Democratic Party's state chairman in Georgia and was quite active in helping Mondale capture that state in the primary earlier this year. Despite Lance's heavy business association with oil-rich Arabs and his remarks about Jews, he was de- fended by two well-known Jewish political activists in Atlanta, includ- ing Carter's White House counsel, Robert Lipshutz, and Jerome Zim- merman, a local businessman. Both said Lance is well-liked and respected in the Jewish community of Georgia. They denied he was anti- Israeli or anti-Semitic. "If enemies of Fritz Mondale at- tempt to undermine his candidacy for President of the United States by either covert or overt attacks on Bert Lance's relationship with American Jews or with the State of Israel, they will find that they are barking up the wrong tree," Lipshutz said in a statement. "Lance's record of action throughout his adult life, both in the public and private sectors, are a trib- ute to his genuine friendship with American Jews and to his support of causes particularly sensitive to us, such as the support and security of the State of Israel, and the constant battle against anti-Semitism, as-re- cently illustrated by his taking a leading role in the efforts of the ADL and the American Jewish Committee in our community's effort in the Leo Frank case," he continued, referring to the Atlanta Jew lynched by an anti-Semitic mob in the early 1900s after being falsely accused of killing a young girl. There have recently been efforts to exonerate Frank. Despite Lance's heavy business association with oil-rich Arabs and his remarks about Jews, he was defended by two well-known Jewish political activists in Atlanta. "Innuendoes relating to his sale several years ago of his stock in the National Bank of Georgia to a Saudi Arabian — details of which were well publicized — ignore the fact that two directors of that same bank are lead- ing and highly respected members of the Atlanta Jewish community and the operation of that bank con- tinuously for the past several years has been under the presidency and management of a highly respected American banker who has spent most of his 30 years in this business as a top officer of the Bank of America," Lipsifutz said. "Would these same critics of Bert Lance come forward and zealously lead a crusade to remove the piesent Secretary of State and the present Secretary of Defense?"
