the fountainhead of the racist gar-
* bage which Louis Farrakhan spews
• out. But while Jackson says he con-
* demns Farrakhan's views, he refuses
to sever their relationship. "I respect
• him very much," Jackson was re-
* cently quoted as declaring. "He, too,
* like all human beings can make er-
rors or be misinterpreted. I don't see
• why we have to be so vindjctive or
• mean."

By any standard, Farrakhan is
• an out-and-out racist who holds the
• white race in the same hatred and
• contempt that the Imperial Wizard of
• the Ku Klux Klan has for the black
race.
No politician with the close ties
to the Imperial Wizard that Jackson
has with Farrakhan could survive in
the upper strata of the Democratic
Party. No aspirant for the President-
ial nomination would dare to include
the KKK leader in his entourage or
accept a personal bodyguard of
klansmen as Jackson used Far-
rakhan's strong-arm squads.
There is a curious affinity be-
tween this Baptist preacher and this
leader of a racist sect that rejects
Christianity and professes to belong
to Islam.
The picture of a free-wheeling
operator like Jackson with a power-
ful voice in the government' is a
frightening one. Jackson has still to
account for some $700,000 in federal
funds advanced to his organization,
PUSH. He has used measures verg-
ing on the old gangster system of ex-
tracting "protection" money to fi-
nance the work of PUSH.
Corporations were compelled to
•contribute to PUSH under threat of a
black boycott of their products. Arab
states which sought black support in
this country for the Palestine Arab
cause were bluntly told there was a
price to pay.
The Christian Science Monitor
report quoting Jackson as telling
Arab representatives that if they did

not provide financing, "we will all
learn to recite the alphabet without
thr letters P-L-O" has never been de-
nied. In recent years, PUSH has re-
ceived substantial sums from the
Arab League.
Jackson is unquestionably the
most powerful black in America to-
day. He undoubtedly commands as
large a black following as Martin
Luther King ever did. But King's ap-
peal (J. Edgar Hoover to the con-
trary) was based on a deep sense of
morality and religious conviction
'and his voice was heard and heeded
far beyond the black community.
Jackson, who aspires to King's
leadership role, is a rabble-rouser
who appeals to the self-interest of his

audience. King offered his followers
dignity and self-respect; Jackson of-
fers them a bigger piece of the pie and
the vicarious thrill of seeing one of
their own beating the white man in
the white man's world.
Rev. Jesse Jackson is a national
problem. He is a divisive force that is
widening the gulf between black and
white and is making a Jewish-black
rapprochement ever more difficult.
He has brought millions of
blacks into the electroal process — a
feat for which he deserves credit —
but he has brought them in to vote for
black candidates, himself primarily,
a development which hastens
polarization and intensifies
separatism and segregation.

Palestinians returning to Gaza, West Bank

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
number of Palestinians re-
siding alined who returned
home to the administered
territories (Gaza and the
West Bank) rose drastically
last year, according to the
Central Bureau of Statis
tics.
Although there are still
more Palestinians leaving
the territories than coming
in, the gap between incom-
ing Palestinians and outgo-
ing has closed sharply. Last

year some 388,918 Palesti-
nians returned home, com- stayed in the territories, but
