'Til 8:30 pm - Papal audience shows faith in Jewish-Christian ties Rome (JTA) — A group of representatives of .a 20-- member delegation of the executive committee of the International Council of Christians and Jews said after a papal audience ear- lier this month that they were struck by the Pope's warmth and cordiality,. and especially by the content of a personal talk they had with him after the official speeches had been given on both sides. As has been happening regularly whenever Jews or Christian friends of Jews meet withe the Pope or other high-ranking Vatican officials, someone asked the question, "Why doesn't the Vatican establish diploma- tic relations with the state of Israel?" This time, however, the person received a more sig- nificant answer than usual. Mme. Huchet-Bishop, a Catholic, and past president of the Jewish-Christian "Amitie" of Paris who had known Jules Isaac Well (The Jewish historial whose encounter with Pope John XXIII catalyzed the ecu- menical council's nostra aetate, boar statement on the Jews was surprised to receive a specific reply from "Pope Woytila" to her ques- tion. There were two reasons, the Pope is reported as hav- ing said. First, the global problems were very com- plex and second, because of the "difficult situation" of Christians in the Middle East. And by way of illus- tration, the Pope is said to have ade a sigificant ges- ture towards one of the delegates, Msgr. Harfouche, who comes from Lebanon. "But there is real ac- ceptance of Israel," John Paul II is said to have re- peated "even though the diplomatic recognition is difficult for the reasons mentioned. The papal audience was a preamble to the five-day in- , ternational colloquium on "1984 and Beyond: Purpose and Strategy in Jewish- Christian Relations which was scheduled to be held this week at Vallombrosa/ Saltino near Florence. The Pope spoke of a need for "a deep change in our heart" meaning "constantly reaffirming common reli- gious values ... in the love of God, and all men and women ... the golden rule, we are well aware, is com- mon to Jews and Christians alike." He asked the group to "work with youth ... to create . . . a new generation of men and 'women, mutu- ally concerned for one an- other and for all." Dr. _Goldbloom, the Jewish ICCJ president, had comments quite similar in content to some of those made by the Pope. "It has been a reciprocal learning process," he said, "and one of the most significant les- sons we have derived from it is that the growth of of har- mony, understanding and mutual respect has in no way diminished the reli- gious integrity and vitality of Judaism or of Chris- tianity — quite the contrary — nor weakened the com- mitment of any Jew or of any Christian to his or her faith." "What is„deeply ap- preciated," said Dr. Goldbloom, "is the readi- ness of the church, under your leadership, to review liturgy, to revise catechism, to reassess and interpret history, to recognize that teachings and policies in the past have . . . led to persecu- tions." Goldbloom also made a formal request of the Pope, asking him to "upgrade the Vatican commission for religious relations with the Jewish 'people" to give it more "scope, initiative and authority" so that one day "every diocese will have a person . working in liaison with the Jewish community whenever it exists, in Israel and all other parts of the world. Israeli-coached German cage team ready for LA New York (JTA) — West Germany's Olympic bas- ketball squad, which will be competing in Los Angeles, this month, is coached by Ralph Klein, a veteran Is- raeli player and former coach of the Tel Aviv Mac, cabi team. For the past two years, Klein has worked full time as coach of the Cologne team of the German Na- tional Basketball League. He is credited with raising the Cologne team to conten- der status and Germany's • hopes in the Olympic bas- ketball competition are largely on his shoulders. The Germans have re- placed the Soviet squad as one of the four basketball teams qualified to represent the European zone in Los Angeles. Klein will continue to coach the. Cologne'team for one more season and then return to Israel. His wife is vice president of a major business firm in Tel Aviv and it is her desire and that of the family' to return.
