Calm broken
with outbreaks
of WB violence

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
lethal devices planted in the
cars of three West Bank
Arab mayors in June 1980
were intended to kill them,
according to a police expert
testifying at the.trial of two
former officers of the Israeli
military government on the
West Bank.
Eli Ben-Bassett, a former
chief superintendent of
police who headed the anti-
sabotage laboratory at na-
tional police headquarters,
was the chief witness for the
prosecution earlier this
month at the trial of Maj.
Shlomo Levytan and Capt.
Ronni Gila. Both officers
have been linked to the
Jewish terrorist under-
ground active on the West
Bank over the past four
years.
Explosive devices were
placed in the cars of Mayors
Bassam Shaka of Nablus
and Karim Khallaf of
Ramllah, both of whom
were seriously wounded. A
third bomb, in the car of
Mayor Ibrahim Tawil of El
Bireh, exploded while being
defused, blinding an Israeli
Druze police sapper,
Sulieman Hirbawi.
In a related development,
the relative calm which had
beerrprevailing on the West
Bank in recent days was
broken earlier this month
by a new wave of rock
throwing incidents.
Rocks hit a Tel Aviv-to-
Jerusalem train July 5 as it
passed near the Arab vii- .
lage of Batir on the out-
skirts of Jerusalem. A win-
dow was smashed but no one
was injured.
An 11-year-old boy was
injured the night before
when the car in which he
was riding was 'stoned on
a road between Jerusalem
and the ,West Bank settle-
ment of Maale Adumim.
Earlier in the day, an auto-
mobile passenger was
slightly wounded by stones
thrown at the vehicle as it
drove by the Dahaishe refu-
gee camp near Bethlehem.
The camp has been calm
for several months, and Is-
raeli• military authorities
have only recently removed
a barricade that had been
erected at its entrace to pre-
vent rock-throwing at pass-
ing vehicles. But that situa-
tion deteriorated after five
Arab youths were wounded
in a clash with Israeli bor-
der policemen near
Bethlehem July 3.
In that incident, the bor-
der police halted three
buses carrying Arab youths
for a security check. The
Arabs, reportedly annoyed
with the treatment of the
policemen, turned to a scuf-
fle. According to military
sources, some of the ybuths
physically attacked the
policemen.
