Mr. Yadin was born in Jerusalem in 1917. He earned his master's degree at the Hebrew University in 1945 and a Ph.D. degree in 1955 and, between ar- cheological expeditions, was a professor of archeol- ogy at the Hebrew Univer- sity since 1959. He was a member of Haganah, the underground defense force of the Jewish community in Palestine from 1932 until the found- ing of the state in 1948. He served as chief of staff, chief of the planning section and Tel Aviv (JTA) — Yigael Yadin, a world famous ar- cheologist who also achieved prominence in Is- raeli military and political affairs, died June 28. Mr. Yadin served as chief of staff of the Israel Defense Force from 1949 to 1952 and was a deputy premier in the government of former Pre- mier Menachem Begin from 1977 to 1981. Mr. Yadin won interna- tional fame for his work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, which his father, the late Elazar Sukenik purchased from an Arab goatherd following the discovery in the Qumrun Caves shortly after World War II. Mrs. Taub is past chair- man of the Women's Di- vision of the United Jewish Appeal and served on the campaign cabinet for many years. She also is a past president of Aliyah Chapter of Hadassah, as well as a member of the board of di- rectors of the Windsor Jewish Community Coun- cil. Elected with her were: Carl S. Cohen, Dr. Michael Malowitz and Bernard Rosenblum, vice presidents; chief of operations of Haganah between 1940 and 1947. Before his promotion to chief of staff of the IDF, he served as it chief of opera- tions and was a delegate to the Israeli-Arab armistice negotiations in Rhodes in 1949. Mr. Yadin left the army in 1952 to devote his career to archeology and writing. He entered politics shortly before the 1977 Knesset elections as leader of a new party, the Democratic Movement for Change (DMC) which took a doveish position on many issues. The fledgling party won 16 Knesset seats in 1977 and seemed, for a time, de- stined to become a signific- ant force in Israeli politics.
