in the IDF's upper echelons.
It might have become a Viet-
nam situation if allowed to go on sev-
eral years," admits Gal, "but Beirut
is still within 60 miles of the border
and it was only for a couple of weeks."
But in terms of commitment, Gal
feels that the "Israeli threshold is
more sensitive in reacting to any-
thing illegitimate than the U.S.
Army."

mentions his family. A 19-year-old
son is not in the States with his fam-
ily because he is in the military, in a
non-combat unit. "He has eye prOb-
lems" Gal explains, and adds, "If you
have a son not in a combat unit, you
have immediately to apologize."
Beyond question, the Israelis
idolize their fighting men. Soldiers
are at the top of the heap in society
and it makes the work easier. But for
'military and civilians alike, the
stress is constant, pernicious.
"Every family has someone in
the military, sometimes several. The
price is high tension. Every Israeli

Gal states frankly, but feels the
judgment is incorrect. They are

Israeli sapper contradicts IDF officer's
testimony in Arab mayor bomb episode

Jerusalem (JTA) ---
Suleiman Hirbawi, a Druze
border police sapper who
was blinded while attempt-
ing to defuse a bomb planted
in the car of Mayor Ibrahim
Tawil of El Bireh in June
1980, testified in Jerusalem
district court that no Israeli
army officer was standing
close to him when the bomb
exploded.

day contradict d the ver-
sion of Capt. Ronni Gila, one
of the two officers attached
to the military government
on the West Bank at the
time. The IDF officers are
being tried separately for
alleged connections with a
Jewish terrorist under-
ground in the territory. Gila
is charged with prior
knowledge of a bomb in
Tawil's garage and failure
to pass the information on to
his superiors or to Hirbawi.
Gila was assigned to
. guide Hirbawi through the
unfamiliar streets of El
Bireh to the mayor's garage.
According to Gila's tes-

timony he entered the gar-
age with Hirbawi, which he
would not have done had he
known of the bomb. Hirbawi
testified Friday that when
he entered Tawil's garage,
,Gila remained in his jeep.
He denied that Gila had
said anything to him on the
way to the garage.
The Tawil assassination
attempt was one of three car
bombings aimed at West
Bank mayors that day.
Basam Shaka of Nablus and
'Karim Khallaf of Ramallah
were maimed in the other
two incidents.
Security forces have been
unable to track down two
other suspected members of
the Jewish terrorist under-
ground believed to have
been directly involved in
the car bombings. One sus-
pect, Yossi Indor of Ofra on
the West Bank is still at
large and believed to be
somewhere in Israel or the
territories.
Another, Ira Rappaport, a
Gush Emunim emissary in
New York, is still in the

,

United States. Rappaport is
suspected of having planted
the bomb in Shaka's car
along with Indor. The West
Bank mayors have since
been deposed by the israeli
authorities.
A third suspett being
sought has not been iden-
tified to the public.
Meanwhile, the trial of 22
suspected members of the
Jewish terrorist under-
ground was suspended last
week until Sept. 16 when
the courts reconvene after
their summer recess. _
All but one of the defen-
dants will remain in cus•
tody. The court agreed to re-
lease on bail Moshe Zar, a
West Bank real estate
dealer who has had health
problems since he was .at-
tacked and beaten by Arabs.
The court also decided to
hold a separate trial• for six
of the defendants who are
directly implicated in the
killing of three Arab stu-
dents and woundng 33 in
an attack on the Islamic
College in Hebron.
