THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, July 6, 1984 37 CATERING FOR ALL OCCASIONS AT OUR FAMOUS LOW PRICES • Market Street way on Northwestern, north of 12 Mile . . . Same style Pickle Barrel lettering on wall .. . and waitresses wear same new uniforms . . . Al worked hard to get it off the ground and in the right direction. The original Pickle Barrel opened in 1976, seat- ing 150 . . . Today, it is so much more modernistic .. . but the elegance is there with large touches of class . . . making it intimate and still "haimishe." Its brightness brings forth more of a cheery, fresh look . . . warmly-styled. Even the foyer has been remodeled . . . Plus the new tile, a brass rail now sepa- rates "in" and "out" . . . and a waiting settee is done in beige upholstery and black formica. At new Pickle Barrel in Evergreen Plaza are carica- tures etched in glass of Jack and Al . . . with heads alongside a pickle barrel .. About those pickle barrels, by the way, even though Jack and Debi and Al and Shelley have greatly up- dated their 12 Mile and Evergreen locale, the one trademark still remains .. . Little wooden pickle barrels appear on all tables .. . They're the original ones from when place opened in 1976 . . . stained and re- stored. Menu has totally ex- panded ... There's now even four nachos . . . A "Down South Nacho From Jewish Section of Mexico" is made with corned beef and cheese . . . Also four various pita bread sandwiches, chili, a peanut butter and jelly omelette and so much more . . . plus things for folks not so hungry... On the menu's back is a humorous Jewish glossary . . . with things like, A Bis- sel — My "true" worth .. . Ongeshtopt — What every- ' body "thinks" I'm worth . . . Gantser K'nackers • — Max Fisher, Al Taubman, Henry Ford or any of our overstuf- fed sandwiches . . . Mazel Toy — Your daughter 41- nally got married at 43 to a Gantser K'nacker .. MazellGlick — To trip in a ditch in your backyard and strike oil. PROBABLY ONE OF the finest and most exciting cookbooks to be published in a long while is the big 269- page (almost 600 luscious recipes) "Superb Secrets From The Kitchen" . . . by Sisterhood of Temple Beth El. 'It's one of the very few which has the great feature of an index . . . to find what- ever a person is looking to prepare . plus definitions of table weights, measures and abbreviations .. . table of contents . . . helpful hints . . . substitutions . . . cake pan conversions.., even a table of food equivalents. "Superb Secrets" was compiled over the last couple of years . . . with re- , cipes by members of the sis- terhood . . . and plenty from the brotherhood, too . . . It is separated into various categories of dining . . . ap- petizers, fish poultry, meat, soup, desserts, etc. The very fine, clear, easy-to-read Temple Beth El cookbook, put out by Kathie Dizik, chairman and her committee of 16 lassies, is every bit worth $10 plus tax . . . on sale at Sisterhood Gift Shop . . . or by mail (add couple of bucks for postage and handling) . . . Make checks payable to Temple Beth El Sisterhood , .. 7400 Telegraph Rd., Birming- ham, Mich. 48010 . . . The recipes are wonderful . . . and the index super. IF FOLKS WERE in- vited to recent grand open- ing party of The Place (former Royal Lounge) on Woodward, south of 131/2 Mile, Royal Oak, it was the place at which to be. Shindig was called "A Taste of The Place" and if Chef Dave Tiffany serves that kind of food, the SRO sign will be constant . . . A large table went from mini- ature bagels and lox to whitefish to oysters Roc- kefeller 'to rumaki to Lon- ' don broil wrapped around artichokes to 'chicken teriyaki to liver pate in a French roll and crab mousse in a French roll . . . to ele- gant pastries made by Dave's sous chef, Mark Kalnow . . . Chocoholic El- liot Trumbull ate strawber- ries double-dipped in choco- late like they were popcorn. About 250 people came to The Place's "A Taste of The Place" . . . and so much champagne that who cared if Shirley Becker spilled a glass while waving her arms (Arnie was at a golf outing). Familiar face was Carol Brown, bar manager and sometimes floor manager at The Place . . . a big smile and a lot of experience is this gal so many folks know from Benny's during Ben Kasle's ownership of the Vineyards. Our busperson, 18-year- old Kae Beth_ Rosenberg, was simply great . smil- ing, very efficient and loaded with personality. Waiter Darryl Vennard is pleasant, quick and knowl- edgeable. Bill Bonds looked relaxed . . . Len Barnes took notes . Bob Allison reminisced . and sb it went . . . with everyone having a good time.
