THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEWS Uruguayan leader pledges continued support of Israel Uruguay has always championed the cause of freedom for Jews, Maeo said, adding that the Jewish community in Uruguay is a "cherished and important segment of Uruguayan society." He cited his coun- try's opposition to anti- Semitic attacks on Israel at the United Nations and said Uruguay recognized the need to urge the Soviet Union to allow those Jews who wish to emigrate. Thursz also met with representatives of the rul- ing Colorado Party and the opposition Blanco Party. His meeting with the execu- tive committee of the latter was the first time that the Blanco leadership has met with a representative of an international Jewish organ- ization. Thursz said the purpose of the meeting was to get first-hand informa- tion on Uruguay's political crisis. Thursz, in Buenos Aires last week, met with Argen- tine government leaders who affirmed their support for human rights everywhere and their oppo- sition to terrorism and the use of the United Nations as a forum for racist and anti- Semitic attacks. Thursz, meeting with Argentine vice president Victor Martinez, informed him of the resolution ap- proved last May by the B'nai B'rith Board of Gov- ernors praising the new Argentine government for initiatives to "ensure the preservation and advance- ment of democracy and human rights" in Argen- tina. r ies rElAccesso tas WINDOW FASHION SALE DEBORAH'S INVITATIONS 12 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE 50%-70% OFF See Our New and Exciting Invi- tations Direct.
