American Jews indifferent to kehillah Caracas (JTA) — Jews throughout Latin America are deeply disturbed by a recent study which showed that while the great major- ity of Venezuelan Jewish college youths have attended Jewish primary and secondary schools, they display apathy and indif- ference to Jewish concerns and play virtually no part in Jewish community activi- ties in this country. According to Manuel Tanenbaum, executive di- rector of the Latin Ameri- can branch of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), the study, headed by prominent sociologist and economist Bernardo Kliksberg, focus- sed on Jewish youths who graduated from Jewish sec- ondary schools in Caracas between 1977 and 1981 and are presently between 20 and 24 years of age. The study noted that the vast majority of Caracas Jewish youth attend the Jewish community's all-day secondary schools and that 93 percent of them go on to college. The pursuit of higher education by nine of every 10 young Venezuelan Jews is one of the highest rates in the world. According to Kliksberg's study, most of them choose technological careers; only a few go into the humanities. But almost all are characterized by a pro- nounced alienation from or- ganized Jewish community life. About 75 percent of Jewish college youth in Venezuela, in fact, do not participate in communal ac- tivities and the majority of them give "lack of interest" as their reason. Against those findings, Kliksberg noted that the general situation of the Venezuelan Jewish com- munity is one of the most favorable in Latin America. It is one of the few Jewish communities with more immigrants than emi- grants. "It is a young com- Friday, June 29, 1984 37 'E foxik THE [JEWISH- NEWS! munity, with a healthy de- mographic pyramid. In addition, historical circum- stances have strongly fa- vored the development of the community. Venezuela is one of the few countries in the region with a stable re- gime and until recently enjoyed an intense process of economic development and social mobility." The Jewish community, Kliksberg reported, "was able to make full use of these favorable conditions. It wisely accorded top prior- ity to Jewish education." • Family Dining 21411 SOUTHFIELD (N. e u 559.1091 BREAKFAST SPECIAL 7 11a. a m .rii to ■ 79 . IIMAI SUM New York (JTA) — Rabbi Alexander Schindler, president of the Union, of American Hebrew Congre- gations (UAHC), has called for an easing of the current strains between blacks and Jews. Rabbi Schindler, speak- ing at a memorial service in New York last week recal- ling the Mississippi murder of three civil rights workers in 1964, said that "blacks and Jews need each other, even as the struggle for jus- tice needs us both." The UAHC • president em- phasized that Americans "must do everything they can to make certain that though (the three) died in pain and terror, they will not have died in vain." The service honored the memory ofJames Chaney of Mississippi and Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner of New York. Chaney, a 21-year-old black, and Schwerner, 24, and Goodman, 20, both Jews, were shot to death while they and other volun- teers were working to regis- ter blacks to vote. Later, seven white men were con- victed of the crime. KOSHER RESTAURANT • 2 Eggs (any style) • 3 Strips of.
