life of this writer . . . That
was the day we became a
father . . . as little Scott
Da4id Raskin came crying
into the world.
Almost 23 years later .. .
June 10, 1984 . . . became
another eventful moment
for us . . . with Scott achiev-
ing the superior responsibil-
ity of manhood by becoming
a married man.
It was this occasion that
brought us to San Antonio,
Tex. . . . where that "little
boy" brought shades of joy-
ous tears as he said "I Do" to
our new daughter-in-law
. . . pretty, warm and per-
sonable Bonnie Sue Buck
. . . Both had met while
attending University of
Texas in Austin.
The wedding was held at
Topatio Springs in Boerne,
Tex.. . . about 25 miles from
San Antonio . . . a beautiful
country club and hotel com-
plex . . . with about 200
people attending.
A couple of Scott's boy-
hood friends from Detroit
were among the groom's
men . . . Ken Maier, best
man, lives in Kansas City,
Mo.. . . and Scott Selik, stu-
dent at University of Texas
. . . Another good friend
from here, John Ray, also
came to the wedding.
Nate Light, working on
the road, was in San An-
tonio . . . and wife Irene
came to meet him, attend
wedding . . . and celebrate
their 13th anniversary . . .
Irene was so excited to see
Nate that she brought him a
Father's Day card by mis-
take . . . instead of one for
their anniversary.
There was Scott's mother,
Gerri Fenton, from Florida,
his half-brothers, Leslie
Ball, chairman of the board
of Macy's Midwest in Kan-
sas City, Kan. . . . with wife
Fran and their fine children
. . . and Howard Ball, head
of the Rattan Showrooms
around Texas . . . with wife
Debbie and their pretty
baby . . . Both Leslie and
Howard were also in the
wedding party . . . and my
wife Frieda, plus brother
and sister-in-law Marvin
and Shirley Raskin, sister
Lillian Rosen and Shirley's
brother, Raymond Arnold,
from Houston, Tex.
Bonnie's dad, Robert
Buck, a leading San An-
tonio architect, and mother
Sandra Williamson of Dal-
las, are mighty proud of
their daughter . . . The wed-
ding had originally been set
to be held at a ranch in Ban-
dero, Tex., -. . but circum-
stances caused last-minute
change . . . and Bonnie
stayed in San Antonio to
help with invitational tran-
sitions ... among Other
things.
Everything turned out for
the best . . . and a lovely
wedding ceremony and cel-
ebration made it a good time
for all . . . with plenty or
food, drinks and dancing.
The rehearsal dinner and

buffet reception Texas-style
revealed one of the finest
waiters we
have
encountered in a long time
. . . Topatio Springs must
get a lot of high accolade
verbiage about Ernest De-
nson . . . smiling, courteous,
ultra-efficient, personable
and cooperative . . . Gra-
cious in his tuxedo, Ernest
had but one thought . . . that
everybody enjoyed a good
time at Topatio Springs .. .
The owners can't buy this
kind of loyalty.
They say it's difficult to
beat Texas hospitality .. .
and this was proven to us
following the marriage .. •
Scott and Bonnie went to
Mexico on their honeymoon
. . . and Nye stayed the week
in San Antonio.
Bob and lady friend Caro-
lyn Pillot took us to place
called Grey Moss Inn on
Scenic Loop Road . . . whose
specialties were charbroiled
steaks and chicken broiled
on a 53-year-old well .. .
and fresh-baked desserts
. . . Bob asked the man out-
side cooking on the well
what was best that night
and he recommended the
pepper steak (steak broiled
covered with black pepper)
and the rib-eye . . . Don't
know what they did to my
steak, but it was so tender,
the knife just glided
through a cutting endeavor
with hardly much effort .. .
Grey Moss Inn is also noted
for its holnemade Pecan Pie
. . . and at the expense of an-
other pound just couldn't re-
sist . . . glad we didn't.
Couple of nights later was
a Texas barbecue at home of
Bonnie's grandparents,
Steve and Gladys Hooge .. .
with three kinds of meat,
etc., etc., etc.. . . a lot of con-
viviality . . . and plenty of
margaritas.
Texas hospitality even
before the wedding, also . . .
Bonnie's maid of honor, Pat
Parker, put on a Mexican
fiesta party at her home
with oodles of food and mar-
garitas galore.
Happy we stayed in San
Antonio . . . so much to see
. . . The Alamo downtown,
site of famous battle which
was a major stepping stone
to Texas independence from
Mexico is just a little mis-
sion with lot of ground .. .
Nothing like where John
Wayne fought . . . but so
rich in Texas history . . .
The Mexican Market (El
Mercado) had its begin-
nings in 1830 . . . and is one
of San Antonio's most his-
toric areas.
One of San Antonio's best
Mexican restaurants is in
the Mexican Market .. .
called La Margarita . . .
with a warning that folks
usually have to wait for a
table at this ceiling-fan-chic
restaurant in the heart of El
Mercado.. . . But customers
don't regret waiting ... The
enchilada and fajita plates
are rich and spiced the way
people want them . . . Its
giant-sized margarita
drinks are especially good
