Report Falasha
plight worsens

Los Angeles (JTA) — An
increasingly desperate por-
trait of conditions facing
Ethiopian Jewry in the
northern Gondar province
was presented by Simcha
Desta, one Falasha who re-
cently fled his homeland.
Desta delivered the keynote
address at a rally marking
the International Week of
Solidarity with Ethiopian
Jewry in Los Angeles Sun-
day. ,
Desta, who escaped
Ethiopia after months of
imprisonment and torture,
said Jewish synagogues
have been closed and the
local religious leaders are
subjected to continued
threats of arrest and vio-
lence. These factors coupled
with the severe drought af-
fecting the region and the
increased clashes between
the military and rebel
groups, have caused many
Jews to flee the region.

JNF trees
honor civil
rights leader

New York — A grove of
trees has been planted in Is-
rael by the Jewish National
Fund (JNF) in memory of
Clarence Mitchell, the civil
rights leader who died
March 14 in Baltimore. The
grove is located in the Mar-
tin Luther King, Jr. Memo-
rial. Forest outside of
Jerusalem.
A long-time supporter of
Israel, Mr. Mitchell was the
chief Washington lobbyist
for the National Association
for the Advancement of
Colored People (NAACP).
As a member of the U.S.
delegation to the United
Nations in 1975, Mr. Mitch-
ell spoke out against the
"Zionism is racism" resolu-
tion sponsored by the Arab
states in the UN General
Assembly. '
