Counter-productive hysteria:
common sense predominates

The staging of the approaching political spectacles, at
the national conventions of the two major competing par-
ties, will surely witness increasing animosities. Name-
calling may not be avoided. Anger will be in evidence. Most
to be avoided is hysteria. Especially in the Jesse Jackson
matter there are menacing hysterical approaches.
Fortunately, they are being defused. This was in evi-
dence at the planning session for the Democratic political
platform to be presented to the national convention in San
Francisco. Jackson's proposal for an endorsement for a
Palestine state was defeated by a 13 to 2 vote. Jackson's
insistent antagonism toward Israel is shown in that the two
who favored his proposal were his chosen members of
Democratic platform committee.
There is a more encouraging factor in Walter Mon-
dale's discussions with Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley in
the consideration to be given for the Democratic Vice
Presidential candidacy. The gesture aimed at defiance of
prejudice toward blacks suggests many things. It is a re-
minder of the squelching of anti-Catholicism in politics. It
emphasizes the strongly-principled relationships between
Jews and blacks in major American cities. This is especially
true in Los Angeles where Jews played an important pro-
Bradley role in an area where a highly-qualified black was
chosen for the highest elected position, although that city's
black population numbers only 13 percent of the total. Jews
and blacks work in harmony in L.A. This is true also in
Philadelphia, as it was in Chicago, where the Jewish vote
counted in mayoralty elections. It is true on a total scale as
a warning to hatemongers that society cannot be poisoned,
even by a Presidential candidate. The atmosphere will be
purified, to the glory of America.

appreciative to the local community. The name of Bernard
Isaacs, who, as superintendent of the United Hebrew
Schools, elevated the standards of the Jewish teaching pro-
fession, but also his linguistic brilliance and his story-
telling skills were notable. To his credit are unforgettable
collections of short stories in Hebrew and in English.
Charles Feinberg has attained a record among the most
distinguished collectors of ceremonial objects, art and
documentaries, and his home is among the most attractive
personal museums ever assembled. Leonard N. Simons
courageously assisted in scores of community objectives
and his approaching 80th birthday should be occasion for
appreciation for half-century of labors for all causes of
merit, involving all faiths. Prof. William Haber has a role
in Michigan and in Jewry that is unforgettable. There are
others whose devotional labors will not be forgotten. Let
the honors go where .they have merited).

Israeli officer's testimony
on bomb disputed by Arab

Jerusalem (JTA) — Ib-
rahim A-Tawil, the deposed
former mayor of El Bireh,
has challenged the claim by
Israeli army Capt. Aharon
Gilla that he did not know
that Jewish terrorists had
planted a bomb in the
mayor's car in June 1980
and could not have warned
Druze border police sapper
Suleiman Hirbawi who lost
his eyesight trying to defuse
the lethal device.
Gilla is one of two Defense
Force officers implicated in
the car bombings that
maimed Mayors Bassam
Shaka of Nablus and Karim
Khallaf of Ramallah four
years ago. Tawil was also a
target of the assassination
attempts.
Gilla and Maj. Shlomo
Levytan have been indicted
but will be tried separately
from the 22 suspected
members of a Jewish ter -

day.
Gilla maintained that he
escorted Hirbawi to
Tawil's garage and there-
fore could not have known
the car was booby-trapped
because his own life would

that Tawil told him at the
time that Hirbawi entered
the garage alone, not es-
corted by Gilla.
