r "..^71f• THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEWS Israeli search for safe roads leads to Bonn Bonn (JTA) — Israel ex- perts, visiting West Ger- man, traffic and safety engineering sites last week, predicted that traffic acci- dents in Israel would be considerably reduced if some of the practices usual in Germany had been applied to Israel. Uri Gerashov, the chair- man of the Israeli Associa- tion of Safety Officers of Traffic Engineering, said Friday in Stuttgart that the Germans stress the human factor in preventing traffic accidents, while in Israel the tendency is to treat more prominently such fac- tors as road conditions and . traffic signals. Gerashov and some 40 other members of the asso- ciation participated in the trip which took them to in- stallations in Stuttgart, Achen, Hamburg and Frankfurt. They were especially im- pressed with the German police practice of letting 18-year-old youths handle traffic control and related jobs which have to do with safety. The Israeli group, Gerashov said, will try to convince their government to apply some of the methods practiced in West Germany. Friday movie in Israel nets demonstration Tel Aviv (JTA) — Several hundred riot-equipped police and border police dis- persed hundreds of black- garbed Orthodox Jews demonstrating outside a Petach Tikva movie house last Friday night as about 1,000 young patrons lined up to see the American film, Breakdance. It was the 16th consecu- tive Friday night that local Orthodox elements at- tempted to interfere with a performance at the Heichal Cinema. This time their sh- outs of "Shabbos, Shabbos" were drowned out by the amplified music of "Ben- zine," a popular rock group that performed outside the theater. The appearance of baton-wielding police was sufficient to break up the demonstration without re- sort to violence. The Or- thodox shouted invectives such as "fascists, Nazis, pigs, desecrators, murder- ers" as they retreated. Earlier in the evening, thousands of Orthodox Jews held a mass rally outside the Petach Tikva city hall to protest the showing of • movies on the Sabbath.
