New York (JTA) —
President Junius Richard
Jyewardene of Sri Lanka
told a delegation of Jewish
leaders last Friday that the
greatest threat to world
stability and global peace is
international terrorism.
Israel Singer, executive
director of the World Jewish
Congress, reported that the
focus of the discussions be-
tween Jyewardene and the
four Jewish leaders was the
role of "radical Arab in-
spired" terrorism seeking to
cause turmoil within Sri
Lanka.
The Jewish leaders
thanked Jyewardene for his
recent decision allowing for
the re-establishment of an
Israel diplomatic presence
in his country. Jyewardene
expressed his gratitude for
the aid given by Israel to Sri
Lanka in the fight against
terrorism and was apprecia-
tive of the understanding
and support conveyed by the
Jewish spokesman in this
regard, Singer reported.

The one-hour meeting
took place at the Waldorf
Towers in New York and
was attended by Singer;
Yehuda Hellman, executive
director of the Conference of
Presidents of Major Ameri-
can Jewish Organizations;
and a representative from
the American Jewish
Committee and the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith.

Proposed bill
is biased,
CJC claims

Montreal (JTA) — A bill
pending in the Quebec Na-
tional Assembly that would
impose a stiff fine on mer-
chants who choose to ob-
serve the Sabbath on Satur-
days but keep their stores
open on Sundays has been
assailed by the Canadian
Jewish Congress (CJC) as
discriminatory against ob-
servant Jews. Violators
would be subject to a $5,000
fine on first offense.
The measure would
exempt certain convenience
stores, including those sell-
ing alcohol which are owned
by the province.
"I find it repugnant that
the sale' of liquor is more
important to the Quebec
population than the obser-
vance of one's Sabbath,"
CJC Quebec region chair-
man, Bernard Finestone,
said at a press conference in
Montreal last week. "Many
Jewish stores are losing
business because they close
Saturday for religious rea-
sons, and again Sunday to
comply with the law. There
are 19 exceptions to the law
already, and I don't think a
20th would make much dif-
ference." , ,
