Minnesota Attorney General Hubert H. Hum- phrey III reminisced about his late father's love for and pride in Israel at the annual Jewish National Fund tes- timonial dinner Wednesday at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Speaking to nearly 400 persons who paid tribute to Norman and Esther Allan, recipients of the JNF's Crown of the Good Name Award for "their efforts on behalf of Jewish and civic causes," Humphrey said his late father, the former U.S. Vice President, "was fasci- nated by Israel. There was a pride with which Dad would inform me of what was going on in Israel." Sounding much like his famous father,. Humphrey said he recalled that visitors from Israel were always guests in his parents' home and that his parents made frequent trips to Israel. The younger Humphrey recalled attending the dedi- cation of the Hubert H. Humphrey Memorial Parkway in Israel. "This seemed to symbolize every- thing he wanted in the world," Humphrey said, de- scribing the tranquility of the scene. "The parkway is where families would find their own familial peace. That's what this whole business is — peace." Humphrey called it an "honor to walk into Hadas- sah Hospital (in Jerusalem) to see the Hubert H. Hum- phrey Cancer Research Center" and said that Ben-Gurion University of the Negev had established the Hubert H. Humphrey Center for Social Ecology in memory of his father. "It's what my father was about," he said, "How to solve these people-to-people problems." He spoke of the need for Israel's security, "Israel needs to have security — to have the trust essential to a democratic society. Security becomes a sense of neighborhood, community with the land. More than weapons, Israel needs secu- rity. That's terribly impor- tant to understand." Referring to the JNF land reclamation, road-building and reafforestation projects, Humphrey said he was im- pressed by the progress Is- rael has made each time he visits the Jewish state. He said the history of Is- rael paralleled that of the U.S., adding that "It's strongest when you look at people coming to clear the land, coming to live in free- dom." Humphrey said support of Israel is in the U.S. national interest. "Our lifestyles, economy are affected by greetings on behalf of the events in that part of the JNF of Detroit were world. Isn't it our national brought by President Jack interest to have self-reliant Zwick, while JNF Execu- allies in that part of the tive Vice President Dr, world?" he asked, adding Samuel I. LUFF Hollywood — Red But- tons recently celebrated his 65th birthday, a quarter- century after winning his Academy Award for Sayo- nara, in which he portrayed a tragic role opposite Mar- lon Brando. Buttons, whose real name is Aaron Chwatt, got his quaint label because of his red hair and blue eyes. As a kid singing at street corners in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, he made his professional debut in the Coopermans choir with the then famous cantor, Yus- sele Rosenblatt. The Catskills became his train- ing grounds; at the Beerkill Lodge he worked for $1.50 per week plus room and board. At 20, he graduated to Minsky's; two years later, he did his first Broadway show. In 1943, Red joined the Army Air Corps where Moss Hart picked him for the show, Winged Victory. After the war, he appeared in sev- eral Broadway shoals and, with the big bands, played New York's movie houses; later came the cafe circuit, the Copa Cabana and Latin Quarter. After guest star- ring on a number of TV shows, he got his own, The Red Buttons Show, on CBS. Sayonara, none-the-less, changed his image in the industry. Buttons was of- fered serious roles as well as comedy parts. The stage and screen veteran has ap- peared in dozens of movies, including: Imitation Gen- eral, The Big Circus, Hatari, The Longest Day, They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, The Poseidon Adventure and Off Your Rocker. His dramatic roles on television go back to the medium's early days. Buttons ap- peared numerous times on Playhouse 90, The U.S. Steel Hour, Studio One and General Electric Theater. • Arnon Milchan, the Is- raeli tycoon who made him- self a name in the cinema with the production of the TV epic, Masada, is at the helm of Legend, a fantasy- adventure from an original screen play by William Hjortsberg, now filming at the British Pinewood Studios for 20th Century- Fox with Tom Cruise head- ing the cast. • Michael York, the British screen star now residing in Hollywood, made his very' first French-language ap- pearance in Au Nom de Tous - Les Miens, shot on locations in Hungary thereby duplicating the Polish background of the story. York portrays a young Jew in the ghetto of Warsaw who survives though his mother and brothers are gassed at Treb- linka and his father killed during the uprising. Copyright 1984, JTA Inc.
