New Israeli
roads cheaper,
easier to build

Haifa — A new method of
road construction, calcu-
lated to reduce costs by
nearly one-third, has been
developed by researchers at
the Technion in conjunction
with Moduleway, Ltd., a Tel
Aviv-based firm.
In contrast to conven-
tional roads in Israel built
solely from asphalt, the
newly developed road is
composed of three layers: a
layer of concrete, a second
layer of grandlar material
(usually sand) and a third
layer of concrete. The mate-
rials are cheaper than as-
phalt, and the quality of the
.road is significantly im-
proved, notes Dr. Elisha
Tatza of the Building Re-
search Center and the Fa-
culty of Civil Engineering,
who headed the Technion
research team. Miron
Tuval, an engineer, repre-
sented Moduleway Ltd. and
Terra Firma Systems Ltd.,
the company that carried
out the applications of the
research developments.
Less work is demanded in
building such roads because
their infrastructure does
not have to be smooth. Fur-
thermore, because of the use
of sand, the distance be-
tween the expansion joints
can be fives time greater
than in asphalt roads, re-
sulting in further savings.

London — At a spring
memorial days of resis-
tance" in Czechoslovakia,
there was no mention of
Jewish suffering during
World War II,
The International Coun-
cil of Jews from Czechos-
lovakia reported that re-
porters were told by the
Communist authorities
that "360,000 Czechs and
Slovaks perished in the
fight against Fascism dur-
ing World War II, 250,000
in concentration camps."
Some 250,000-300,000
Czech Jews are believed to
have been victims in the
Holocaust.
