UN leader to meet Arafat
Geneva (JTA) — Accord-
ing to the United Nations
office in Geneva, the UN
Secretary General, Javier
Perez de Cuellar, will meet
PLO chief Yasir Arafat in
Geneva next month.
De Cuellar will be here to
open the Ecosoc Conference
early in July and on
July 20 as the high commis-
sioner for the Conference on
African Refugees. It is not
yet known which conference
will be attended by Arafat.
Meanwhile, in Rome last
week at the funeral of
Enrico Berlinguer, leader of
the Italian Communist
Party, Arafat met with
President Sandro Pertini
and other top government
officials.
The PLO leader, who has
been on the move since his
ouster from Lebanon last
year by Syrian-backed PLO
dissidents, turned up in the
Piazza San Giovanni where
the cortege began. He found
a seat on the reviewing
stand between Mikhail
Gorbaciov, No. 2 man of the
Soviet Communist Party
and Chinese Premier Zhao
Ziyange. Like the others, he
raised his arm in a clenched
fist salute to the thousands
of Italian Communists who
crowded the plaza.
Arafat was received later
by Premier Bettino Craxi
and Foreign Minister Giulio
Andreotti. He also met with
Francesco Cossiga,
President of the Italian Se-
nate.
According to a PLO
statement issued here, the
Italian President "reiter-
ated his support for the
Palestinian people, its right
to self-determination and
an independent state."
In Jerusalem, the Israeli
government lodged a "vig-
orous protest" with Italy
over the meeting between
Andreotti and Arafat.
David Kimche, Director
General of the Foreign
Ministry, telephoned the
Italian ambassador, Cor-
rado Taliani to convey the
protest. He told the envoy
that such meetings were
tantamount to "artificial
respiration" for an organ-
ization that has been beaten
on the battlefield, is in
internal disarray and no
longer represents anyone.
Spain-Israel
ties expected
New York (ZINS) —
World Zionist Organization
(WZO) executive committee
member Jacques Torczyner
has expressed optimism
that the establishment of
diplomatic relations be-
tween Spain and Israel will
take place in the near fu-
ture.
Torczyner, who has been
on a speaking tour in
Europe, the United States
and South America, feels
that despite numerous obs-
tacles, Spain is now leaning
in this direction.
