A strong and secure Israel
is vital to America's na-
tional interest. While we
continue to provide direct
economic and military as-
sista-nce to support that
goal, the key to Israel's
long-range stability is the
strengthening of its own
economic base.
In an effort to promote
that economic indepen-
dence, I have co-sponsored
H.R.3577, legislation giv-
ing the President authority
to negotiate an agreement
calling for the mutual
elimination of tariffs on
goods traded between the
U.S. and Israel.
The creation of this Free
Trade Agreement between
the U.S. and Israel would
serve the best interests of
both nations. U.S. exporters
would benefit because such

an agreement would put
them on an equal footing
with their European com-
petitors, most of whom will
have complete duty-free ac-
cess to Israel's $8 billion
market by 1989. Israeli ex-
porters would benefit be-
cause the agreement would
provide a secure and stable
framework with the U.S.
which is Israel's largest
tradeing partner.
Everyone benefits from
this proposal, and I am
hopeful it will be acted upon
promptly by the House
Ways and Means Commit-
tee so that we can take the
first step toward
strengthening trade and
ecomomic relations be-
tween our two nations.

Timna Mines recreation
facility opens near Eilat

Timna (JTA) — The
Timna Mines Park, a
Jewish National Fund land
development project backed
by a $1 million contribution
from Avrum Chudnow,
opened last month following
dedication ceremonies.
The major recreational
facility lies 20 miles north of
Eilat, at the beginning of
the desert landscape of Is-
rael's Arava region. The to-
wering pillars of King Sol-
omon form a majestic
backdrop.
The park, which is a joint
venture of the JNF's Na-
tional Leadership Council,
the Regional Council of
Eilat, and the Tourism
Ministry, will offer a full
range of facilities for recrea-
tion, and cultural and edu-
cational enrichment.
The water for the lake

will be supplied by a per-
manent reservoir into
which flood waters will flow
during the rainy season.
There is another source of
water beneath the mines.
The lake, together with
youth camps and a visitors
center, will be the major
recreational points in the
park.
The lake will offer water
sports, including sailing,
boating, fishing, windsurf-
ing and swimming. A foot-
path dotted with shaded
seating and picnic spots will
surround the artificial lake.
Chudnow, a Milwaukee
businessman, hopes the $5
million park will boost the
economy in Eilat, which has
been suffering economically
since the Timna Copper
Mines were forced to close
because of the depression in
the world copper market.

Pope meets Swiss Jews

Geneva (JTA) — A dele-
gation of Swiss Jewish lead-
ers, among them Chief
Rabbi Alexander Safran of
Geneva, met with Pope
John Paul II in Fribourg
last week.
Jean Nordman, president
of the Jewish community in
Fribourg, said the meeting,
though brief, was extremely
friendly and warm. The
Pope noted that he always
endeavors to meet with
Jewish representatives on
his apostolic trips through-
out the world.
George Brunshweig,
president of the Federation
of Swiss Jewish Com-
munities who was spokes-
man for the group, appealed
to the Pope for Vatican
recognition of Israel and
urged him to issue a dec-
laration against anti-
Semitism.
Brunshweig presented
