NCYI leaders
debate stability
at NY parley

New York — Two De-
troiters, both regional vice
presidents of the National
Council of Young Israel
(NCYI), expressed dissatis-
faction with the lack of
long-term stability in con-
temporary Orthodox com-
munities throughout the
country at the organzation's
annual convention in
Spring Glen, N.Y. last
month.
Milt Duchan, who chaired
the session on community
stability, objected to the
"cut and run" mentality
brought about by Jewish af-
fluence, saying that such an
attitude devastates Or-
thodox communities in
roughly 20-year cycles.
Meanwhile, Jerry
Kellman criticized the lack
of emphasis in Jewish edu-
cation on basic moral values
and ethics. This often re-
sults in -a callous, selfish
attitude toward communal
concerns, the NCYI leader
said.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Tel
Aviv police made one of the
largest drug hauls in Is-
rael's history last week
when they seized a truck,
which had just arrived from
Lebanon, and found 2'/2 tons
of hashish. Four members of
a Jaffa family which owns
the truck were detained.
The hashish had a street
value of more than $2 mil-
lion.
Acting on a tip, the police
surrounded the truck,
which had been hired by the
Defense Ministry for con-
struction work in south
Lebanon. They dug through
its cargo of sand to find
scores of nylon bags filled
with the hashish.
