Din. 4 to 2 a.m 851-7400 DANNY RASKIN FROM A SMALL neighborhood bar that served a nice corned beef or hamburger sandwich . . into a new and beautiful dining place with glamor- ous atmosphere . . . with complete cuisine. This is the new The Place restaurant that opened May 17 . . . like the transforma- tion of Cinderella into a beautiful princess . . . It was formerly the Royal Lounge of many years . . . sporting a better-than-average repu- tation . . . on Woodward be, tween 13 and 14 Mile roads. Standing on the corner of Chester Avenue in Royal Oak, it majestically looks like a reincarnation . . . the gray brick free-standing building . . . with side entrance beneath a gray awning that reads, "the place the place the place." A large, private parking lot in the rear makes certain folks have ample space for their vehicles. There's seating for 137 inside . . . with a lounge .. . and any similarity to Royal Lounge just isn't anywhere to be seen . . . That's how much of a change has been made. The decor is mostly in maroons and grays . . . as soft, padded booths are wrapped around the dining room walls . . . with glass dividers, black vases, black tablecloths and maroon napkins . . . striking ceiling lighting with almost 400 bulbs a la Las Vegas .. . within a black overhang .. . The walls are glorified with gorgeous paintings on fused glass . . . done by owner John Forie's sister-in-law, Judy Townsend of Grand Haven, Mich., who exhibits her fine works. Probably one of the most popular lassies around town . . . Geri "Fufu" Carpenter, waitress, hostess and bar- maid for 17 years at Jakks . . . and hostess a year at Stage Deli in Oak Park .. . is day and evening man- ager. Chef is Dave Tiffany, whose experience numbers being with Chef Ted Katapodis and Chef Geza Lang at the former Raleigh House . . . He has an associ- ates degree from Oakland Community College . . . and attended Purdue U. for hotel and restaurant man- agement . . . Prior to The Place, Dave was head chef at Bi-County Hospital . . . doing all the board and v.i.p. dinners . . . plus his culi- nary chores. It's nice to eat at a place where the chef makes his own sauces from scratch, own dressings and own soups . . . These are tremen- dous assets for any dining establishment. Our waitress, Karen Mathie, was very efficient, cordial, most pleasant . . . and smiling . . . I had some- thing can't recall ever hav- ing before . Pimiento Soup (that , spelling is cor- rest, folks) . . . creamy in a chicken base with oodles of pimientos . . . This is a de- licious soup that has become quite a favorite at The Place. The house dressing of mustard vinaigrette had an individualistic taste as it complemented the cold let- tuce in our salad ... Know- ing that Dave loves to saute foods, that's what I had .. . Veal. A La Place . . . provimi veal cut from the eye of the round, sauteed in a dry white wine cream sauce .. . topped with large decora- tive mushrooms and a mild, delicate melted provolone cheese. This was a very tasty dish . . . garnished by Dave with fanned strawberries and a tomato rosette . . . Dave also garnishes with sculptured lemon and orange rinds .. . Everything is tastefully done . . . not gaudy. His presentations are many . . . including five steaks, five fish and sea- foods, incl 'tiding orange roughy combined with spinach, baked in a flaky puff pastry, three chicken dishes . . . with a chicken Wellington that is also fast becoming a favorite (bone- less breast 'of chicken stuf- fed with mushrooms, on- ions, garlic and sherry, and wrapped in a flaky puff pas- try) . . . four salads, three soups, eight appetizers, in- cluding miniature bagels served with lox and cream cheese, 10 sandwiches and eight side dishes. The transition from Royal Lounge to The Place is quite unbelievable. BUGS BEDDOW, jazz- trombonist, and his quartet appear Thursdays through Saturdays at Murdock's on Crooks, Auburn Heights, through tomorrow . . . He'll be followed by guitarist Joe LoDuca and his group Thursday through Satur- day till July 14. (" TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO, Louie Marr and Ron- nie Shandel began playing together at a place called Dominoes at Hamtramck . . . Louie on piano and Ron- nie on bass guitar were a team . . . joining with Billy Rose to become one of the most popular trios in town . . . Billy played lead . . . and shared vocalizing with Ronnie. The trio was wonderful at Danny's 'Hour Glass and then Angel's Hour Glass on W. McNichols, west of Southfield. Today, Louie and Ronnie are back together -again . in the fine quartet at Jakks, Greenfield and Ten Mile, while Billy does his bit at Le Bordeaux on Six Mile and Middlebelt. Louie is still on the keyboard and Ronnie strums lead guitar he's been doing for many years now . Ronnie used to be abso- lutely wonderful on the voc- als . . . but for some reason, stopped singing . . . Many
