Lein of Leningrad, USSR,
will be marked at 8:45 a.m.

their b'nai mitzvah with the
Soviet Jewish youth.
Alexei's parents are
Yevgeny, a mathematician,
and Irina, a biochemist. The
Leins applied for emigra-
tion to Israel in 1978, but
were refused on the grounds
of "secrecy."
In 1981, a lecture of the
Jewish Seminar Program,
organized by refuseniks,
was prevented from taking
)lace in the Lein home by
.he KGB. A week later, at a
ecture on Shabbat, Lein
'vas arrested for "obstruct-
ng authority." In August,
le was sentenced to two
ears working for the na-
ional economy. He was re-
eased after one year for
rood behavior.

Eric Baum, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Martin (Marcia) Baum
of Detroit,will share his bar
mitzvah with Vitaly Brin of
Kiev, Ukrainian SSR,
USSR, at Cong. T'chiyah on
June 23 at 9:30 a.m.
Vitaly is the only child of
Vladimir and Natalia Brin.
Vitaly's father applied to
leave the Soviet Union in
January 1980 and was re-
fused permission to immig-
rate to Israel based on "in-
sufficient kinship" even
though Brin's sister and
mother live in Israel. Un-
like other refuseniks who
are denied exit visas based
on security reasons or state
priority jobs, Brin is a build-
ing engineer.
Eric has written several
letters to Vitaly and his
family, all of which went
unanswered. One letter was
returned as undeliverable
without further explana-
tion. Eric has also written to
Vitaly's aunt and
grandmother in Israel and
hopes to visit with them in
Israel this summer.

chair with a talit dedicated
to Vitaly.
