Simon Wiesenthal
in recent years that it has no

outs of Mengele. Neverthe-
less, he is believed to have
been livng in Paraguay
since 1959. In 1979, under
stiff international pressure,
the South American coun-
try revoked Mengele's citi-
zenship.
Wiesenthal, who is based
in Vienna, also provided
documents, some urpotedly
signed by Mengele, which
described experiments he
ordered to be carried out on
Jewish and gypsy children.

Paris (JTA) — Police and
fire-fighters have described
as "a clear case of arson" a
blaze that severely dam-
aged a synagogue in the
Paris suburb of Drancy last
week. Cans of petrol were
set on fire and 'thrown
against the building which
also serves as a community
center in the heavily Jewish
populated suburb.
The Drancy synagogue
was partially destroyed by a
similar attack in 1978. A
police investigation of that
incident yielded no clues
and no arrests were ever
made. Police officials said
last week that the latest
arson probably was the
work of an individual which
makes it difficult to track
down the culprit.

Nazi-hunter Simon Wie-
senthal Monday urged the
United States to press the
government of Paraguay to
locate and extradite Joseph
Mengele, the notorious Nazi
war criminal dubbed the
"angel of death," for his
crude and inhumane exper-
iments on inmates at the
Auschwitz death camp dur-
ing World War II.
Wiesenthal also told a
news conference in New
York that the 73-year-old
Mengele, responsible for the
deaths of some 400,000
Jews was sighted in
Paraguay as recently as six
months ago. Mengele lived
at the Astra hotel in the
Mennonite Village of Val-
endam, Wiesenthal said.
Joining Wiesenthal yes-
terday was Rep. Stephen
Solarz (D-NY) whose pro-
posed amendment seeking
to link future U.S. military
aid to Paraguay to that gov-
ernment's cooperation in
apprehending Mengele has
passed in the House and is
awaiting consideration in
the Senate.
The Paraguan govern-
ment of President Alfredo
Stroessner has maintained
