Jerusalem (JTA) ---
United Nations Secretary
General Javier Perez de
Cuellar was told by Israeli
leaders this week of their
"sense of disappointment
and disillusionment" over
the way issues in the Middle
East have been dealt with
by the world organization.
De Cuellar arrived here
Tuesday on the final leg of
his tour of the region, his
first since taking office.
Previous stops were in
Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and
Jordan.
The UN Secretary Gen-
eral met with an Israel
negotiating team headed by
Premier Yitzhak Shamir
and David Kimche, Director
General of the Foreign
Ministry. Shamir himself
holds the portfolio of
Foreign Minister.
De Cuellar was greeted
by Kimche at Ben Gurion
Airport and the Israeli offi-
cial did not conceal his
country's deep reservations
over the UN role in the
Middle East. "It would be
dishonest of me if I were to
disguise the fact that here
in Israel, at least, there
exists a sense of disap-
pointment and dissillu-

sionment . . . and that is-
sues concerning Israel and
the region have been so
often dealt with in a manner
which we consider to have
been unjust."
The Secretary General
said in reply, "I earnestly

in Jerusalem

Toronto (JTA) — A group
of prominent professors
from across Canada will
travel to Jerusalem next
month for the first Canada-
Israel conference to be held
under the auspices of the
Program of Canadian
Studies at the Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem.
The conference, whose
theme is "Planning in a
Period of Instability and
Uncertainty," will bring
Canadian and Israeli aca-
demics together to discuss
planning in many of its as-
pects — social, geographic,
economic. The conference,
slated for July 1-5, includes
field trips as well as work-
shops and lectures, some of
which will be open to the Is-
raeli public.

hope that we may together
be able to agree on some
constructive, positive, just
steps in order to improve the
present situation in the
area."
Talks in Jerusalem cen-
tered on Lebanon, where
disagreement surfaced over
the weekend when Shamir
proposed that the United
Nations Interim Force in
Lebanon (UNIFIL) be em-
ployed as a buffer separat-
ing the Israeli and Syrian
armies in eastern Lebanon.
De Cuellar, who was in
Lebanon at the time, main-
tained that this was not a
proper role for UNIFIL.

More Israelis
travel abroad

Tel Aviv (ZINS) — Some
767,000 Israelis travelled
abroad on holiday last year,
representing an 18 percent
increase from 1982, accord-
ing to the Central Bureau of
Statistics.
Israeli tourists spent
$780 million while on vaca-
tion in foreign countries,
approximately $1,020 per
capita, the bureau reported.
