Valerian Trifa honored by Romanian
Church at his 'retirement' banquet

Archbishop Valerian
Trifa, the Romanian Or-
thodox Church leader from
Grass Lake who was strip-
ped of his naturalized citi-
zenship and faces deporta-
tion from the United States
for lying about his activities
in Europe during World
War II, was honored Sunday
at a testimonial banquet in
Warren.
About 500 people paid
tribute to the archbishop,
who recently announced his
retirement from the

Holocaust
exhibit in Spain

New York — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith European Founda-
tion (ADLEF) will sponsor
an exhibition on the
Holocaust at various sites in
Spain through the end of
June.
The exhibition will in-
clude films on the Jewish
resistance during World
War II and on anti-
Semitism as well as a sym-
posium on "Neo-Nazism
Today."

Church. Speakers praised
Trifa's role in welding a
splintered Romanian com-
munity into a united group
and called him "an innocent
man who did no harm to
anyone."

Israel's work
ethic strongest,
report discloses

New York — Israeli
laborers were rated as hav-
ing the strongest work ethic
in a recent report issued by
the Aspen Institute for
Humanistic Studies.
The study, "Work and
Human Values: An Inter-
national Report on Jobs in
the 1980s and 1990s,"
examines work values and
their affect on the quality
and attitudes of the work-
force in a number of indus-
trialized economies. Some
57 percent of the Israelis
querried were found to have
a strong work ethic. Israel
was followed by the United
States, 52 percent; Japan,
50 percent; Sweden, 45 per-
cent; Germany, 26 percent;
and England, 17 percent.

Trifa, who was stripped of
his citizenship by a federal
court in Detroit in October
1982, has been accused of
inspiring anti-Semitic acts
in Romania; including a
1941 pogrom in which 300
Jews and Christians were
killed. Since his trial and
deportation order, Trifa and
the U.S. Justice Depart-
ment have unsuccessfully
searched for a country will-
ing to accept him. The ar-
chbishop will be sent to
Romania in October if no
other country will accept
him, according to the Jus-
tice Department.
