B'NAI MITZVAH • Shaarey Zedek b'not mitzvah twin rites with Soviet teens Barbara Stalburg and Cory Durbin will share their b'not mitzvah with Irina Tarnopolsky of the Ukraine at 8:45 a.m. Shab- bat services Saturday at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Irina's parents, Yuri, a chemist, and Olga, first applied for permission to emigrate in December 1976. They were refused the first time in September 1979. The reason given for refusal was "insufficient relation- ship to the person in Israel who 'sent the invitation" to the family. Tarnopolsky has been one of the teachers in the "Kharkov University" -- an underground educational opportunity for refuseniks to further their children's education in science sub- jects on a post-high school level. In August 1981, uni- formed police raided the Tarnopolsky home as well as those of two friends, all involved in the "univer- sity," which was due to re- open that day. In 1980, Tarnopolsky had joined a group of refuseniks in a protest hunger strike coinciding with the.opening 1E44 0' 1. of the Madrid Conference. He • was subsequently punished by having his telephone diconnected. In 1983;12 year old Irina appealed unsuccessfully to the late Soviet leader Yuri Andropov to allow the fam- ily to emigrate. Her father subsequently went on trial' and was sentenced to three years, in a labor -camp on charges of "slandering the Soviet state." Barbara is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey (Di- ana) Stalburg. Cory is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mel (Renee) Durbin. Susan Tam and Melissa Maddin shared their b'not mitzvah ceremony on June 2 with Regina Tsesler at Shaarey Zedek Shabbat services. Regina's parents, Isaac, a railroad worker, and Marta, of the Ukraine, have been . denied permission to emi- grate to Israel since 1974. The only reason given was Isaac's army service in the Sports Division in 1969- 1971, when the Soviet gov- ernment says he was privy to "military secrets." Inforniation regarding Regina and her family has , - -
