At United Savings, we make it easy Shamir: Jerusalem is target of propaganda drive Jerusalem (JTA) — Pre- mier Yitzhak Shamir charged that the nations of the world are conducting a "libelous propaganda cam- paign" against Israel's de- signation of Jerusalem as its capital: He spoke at a rally marking the 17th an- niversary of the city's reunification. This will end, just as "the fences and barricades divid- ing the city disappeared," Shamir said. Knesset Speaker Menachem Savidor praised Mayor Teddy Kol- lek of Jerusalem for urging cooperation among the many communities that live in the capital. Meanwhile, Kollek de- nied that he objected to the moving of the American Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Former autonomy negotiator Sol Linowitz was reported recently to have quoted Kollek as being' op- posed to the removal, be- cause it would embarrass President Ronald Reagan. However, in a cable to Linowitz, Kollek stressed that Jerusalem was the cap- ital of Israel and it was too bad that the American Em- bassy had not been moved there many years ago. Kollek said he did not be- lieve that giving in to Arab demands would improve the standing of either the U.S. or Israel. Linowitz replied to Kol- lek that he was surprised by the false publication using his name, and that he was , well aware of Kollek's posi- tion on the status' of Jerusalem for many years. In a related development, Congressman Richard Ot- tinger and the American Jewish Congress an- nounced a public campaign to press the White House and the State Department to place the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem under the con- trol of the TJ,S. Ambassador to Israel. Currently, the consulate reports directly to Washing- ton, bypassing the U.S. Em- bassy in Tel Aviv. Accord- ing to aJerusalem Post arti- cle by AJCongress Jerusalem representative David Clayman and Peretz Levine, the consulate has been "the target of official and unofficial complaints as to its pro-Arab and even pro-PLO activities." Congressman Ottinger reported that 45 members of Congress have joined in the signing of a letter to President Reagan request- ing a change in the consu- late's status.
