U.S. Rep.. lauds Israel at Pioneer Women parley New York — Emphatic pro-Israel statements made by U.S. Rep. Geraldine Fer- raro (D-N.Y.) drew a warm response at a meeting of young professional mem- bers of Pioneer Women/ Naamat this spring. Rep. Ferraro, as chairman of the Platform Committee, is a key figure in the Demo- cratic Party. "The Palestinians are using the women and chil- dren in the refugee camps to generate sympathy . . . it's disgraceful to see what is happening there," she said of her recent trip to the Middle East. Rep. Ferraro, an original co-sponsor of legislation to move the United States em- bassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, explained mat- ter of factly: "It seems to me, if that's the capital, then that's the capital." Rep. Ferraro also indi- cated her unequivocal posi- tion on the Golan Heights: "There is no way that, if I were the Prime Minister of Israel, I would ever agree to it being given back to any- one." Of her own possible Can- didacy for vice president, Rep. Ferraro assured the Pioneer Women/Naamat group, which considers equal rights for women a major component of its American agenda, that whether or not she were chi:pen, "there will be women considered . . . and more important than that, there will be women in that room helping to make the decision about vice president." Rep. Ferraro Rep. Ferraro, who became a member of Pioneer Women/ Naamat at the meeting, discussed how she balanced family and career. "My husband and I thought we were doing so well when we. had two children," she related. "Then we had a third and all of a sudden I realized I didn't have a third hand!" Fewer emigres: Red Cross station closes Vienna (ZINS) — The closing of the Red Cross sta- tion in Wein-Simmering can be partly attributed to the drastic decrease in the number of' Jewish emi- grants from the Soviet Union, according to Leah Slovin, director of the Jewish Agency's Vienna bureau. Such emigrants usually make Vienna their initial stop after leairing the Soviet Union. Soviet Jewish emigration has fallen off from a peak of more than 51,000 in 1979 to 1,320 last year. ...
