ONE OF THE legends of
jazz, Lionel Hampton, re-
turns to P'Jazz concert stage
at Hotel Pontchartrain,
Washington Blvd., this
Monday . . . and a hot local
group working on its own
legend, Katalenic Kwek,
plays there this Wednesday.
Lionel Hampton played
with jazz greats Louis
Armstrong and Benny
Goodman in the '30s, before
forming his own band.
It was Louie who invited
Hampton to play vibes in-
stead of his drums one day ;
starting a love affair that
resulted in. Hampton being
named to the "Vibes" chair
in Playboy's annual All-
Star Jazz and Pop poll every
year since its inception 18
years ago.
Today, after 45 years at
the drums and vibes,
Hampton and his band still
play 50 weeks a year in the
United States and abroad.
RED PARROT at
Michigan Inn, J.L. Hudson
Drive, has gotten to be a
personality haunt ... with
folks from media and sports
making it a regular for
nightlife fun.
