THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, June 8, 1984 33 CIAISIPIEDS NEWS GET ROWS • Call The Jewish News 424-8833 Cairo gunmen wound Israeli Jerusalem (JTA) — Zvi Kedar, an official of the Is- raeli Embassy in Cairo, was wounded in the arm when unknown gunmen opened fire on his car and escaped in their own car late Mon- day night. Yosef Amihoud, a Foreign Ministry spokes- man, said Tuesday that Egyptian authorities have launched an intensive in- vestigation of the incident in cooperation with the Is- raeli Embassy. The shooting occurred near Kedar's home as the Israeli diplomat was return- ing from Cairo airport. He had just bid goodbye to Eliahu Ben-Elissar, chair- man of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Secu- rity Committee, who met with President Hosni Mubarak Monday. Ben- Elissar, who was Israel's first Ambassador to Egypt, brought Mubarak a mes- sage from Premier Yitzhak Shamir. The former envoy's trip to Cairo was linked to efforts to thaw Israli-Egyptian re- lations, which have been frozen since Egypt called home its ambassador in Tel Aviv following Israel's 1982 Lebanon invasion. The envoy has still not returned. Returning to Israel, Ben-Elissar said he was surprised, while in Cairo, to read in the Israeli press that a ranking Israeli military officer had warned of the possibility of hostilities be- tween Israel and Egypt. Maj. Gen. Ehud Barak, chief of military intelli- gence, delivered that warn- ing at Sunday's Cabinet meeting and again Monday in briefing the Knesset committee which Ben- Elissar heads.
