Israeli MDs
develop new
burn treatment
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israeli
physicians believe they
have made an important
breakthrough in the treat-
ment of burns. Medical re-
searchers at the Hadassah
Hebrew University Medical
School and doctors at
Shaare Zedek Hospital,
both in Jerusalem, are re-
ported to have perfected a
new technique for culturing
skin tissues.
Drs. Natan Sterberg and
Yaacov Golan of Shaare
Zedek and Prof. Yehiel Be-
char of Hadassah Medical
School have successfully
grown sheets of skin large
enough for grafts, employ-
ing a technique first de-
veloped in the U.S.
American research was
suspended because ample
supplies of skin were avail-
able from cadavers. In Is-
rael, religious law forbids
the use of any part of a
cadaver. The Israeli resear-
chers say they can grow a
four by eight inch sheet of
skin from a few cells in
41 about two weeks.

Arson destroys
Reconstructionist
office in NY
New York (JTA) — The
executive director of the
Federation of Reconstruc-
tionist Congregations and
Havurot said last week that
an arson fire had gutted the
area in which the offices of
the federation were housed
as well as the rest of the
three-story building in
upper Manhattan.
Rabbi David Teutsch told
the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency that the fire mar-
shall had informed him the
fire was the result of an
arson attempt. Teutsch said
he believed- the arson was
not aimed at the federation
offices "though we can't be
sure." He added that all the
files and records of the
agency had been destroyed.
Mann hits
Stinger sale
New York (JTA) — The
Reagan Administration's
sale of Stinger anti-aircraft
missiles to Saudi Arabia,
approved last week, is "un-
necessary and dangerous,"
according to American
Jewish Congress President
Theodore Mann.
In a statement issued last
Thursday criticizing the
sale, Mann said the Stin-
gers "are extraneous to any
genuine concern for Saudi
self-defense. Saudi Arabia
already has one of the most
advanced air defense sys-
tems in the world.
"Their only potential use
of these weapons is against
Israel, with whom the
Saudis insist on maintain-
ing a state of war."
