certain to emerge as an aspect of concern that can sink into
degradation.
This writer, with a record of having fully respected
religious traditionalism, and as a lifelong associate in some
respects with both Vladimir Jabotinsky and Menachem
Begin; has no hesitation in expressing contempt for what
had developed in Israel in religious ranks. The opportunity
that has been provided by the Israeli concept of democracy
for a minority to dominate the events of a much-troubled
country should force whoever has any influence whatever
in the Israeli development schemes to demand an end to
that domination, and if the formation of a new Israel gov-
ernment compels dependence upon the religious factions,
there should at least be a concession that religious liberties
will not be trifled with as a bargaining factor leading
toward genuine freedoms in Israel for all elements, regard-
less of their Orthodox, Conservative, Reform or Recon-
structionist affiliations and the secularist as well. It can
never be ignored that Zionist leadership has, in the main,
been non-committed, even by secularists like Weizmann,
Brandeis, Ben-Gurion, et. al. Stephen Wise and Abba Hillel
Silver were never the intolerant, even toward the sec-
ularists.
Genius meriting Nobel Peace Prize honors is ending in
tragedy. Begin has even withdrawn his name from the
Likud list in the oncoming election. Why such an end?
Because the man and his party who gained power, overcom-
ing the Labor Party, did not possess the vision bordering on
wisdom to reject fanatically religious demands which sup-
pressed freedom for Jews, in the religious realms, that was
granted to non-Jews. That lack of realization of dangerous
developments stemming from situations that even permit-
ted the rise of a Jewlsh type of terrorism, failed to stem the
threat of a fraticide creating enmities between Ashkenazi
and Sephardi Jews.
Such are some of the elements in an internal strife
initiating a decisive election in Israel.
,Perhaps this is assuming too much. Yet, if the effort
should be made that basic Jewish ethically democratic
rules should predominate, some sort of such influence must
be aimed for and encouraged.
The American Presidential election has an equation
with it that cannot be ignored. Even if the candidates were
to ignore an emphasis on pledges to Israel, this sensational
means of creating disputes will be drawn into the evolving
discussions.
Long before the November election, the so-called
"Jewish vote" is already on the agenda. Worse: the talk
about "Jewish money" coming from the varying supporters
of candidates for the Presidency will be widely bandied.
American Jewry needs courageous leadership, a Louis
Marshall, perhaps the Wise and Silver mentalities, to ex-
press outrage that instead of discussing the nation's social
and economic needs politicians are dragging the matter
into the gutter. Support for Israel is a human factor, fully
related to the social and human rights, and the demand
must be made that it be treated in that fashion.
Is leadership strong enough properly to approach the
issues? If it is not, and indications are that there is a lack of
such strength, then the time has come for actions within
the ranks.

Winners of the 1984 Harry and Sarah Laker Israel Youth
Scholarship are Charlotte Levy of Southfield, second from

Attending the presentation of the scholarships were from
