potential American immig-
rants. Rabbi Moshe
Levinger, one of the leaders
of the Gush, returned only
recently from one of his
trips to the United States on
a similar mission.
Levinger was released on
bail May 24, following 11
days in custody. It is now
known whether the state
plans to prosecute him. An-
other leader of Gush
Emunim, Rabbi Eliezer
Waldman, the rabbi of
Yeshivat Neer-Kiryat Arba
was arrested last week. He
is suspected of having had
prior knowledge about some
of the terrorist activities at-
tributed to the Jewish
group.
The arrest of Waldman
hit residents in Kiryat Arba
and his students at the
Yeshiva by surprise,
Waldman is number four on
the Tehiya Knesset list.
Leaders of the Tehiya, Prof.
Yuval Neeman and Geula
Cohen, expressed confi-
dence the rabbi was inno-
cent.
Rabbi Levinger gave an
interview to Yediot
Aharonot, saying the sus-
pects were no "Jewish un-
derground," whereas an
underground works against
the _ state, the suspects
meant to strengthen the
rule of the state and the
government which had lost
its control in Judea and
Samaria, said Levinger.
In Eilat, American
Zionist leader Charlotte
Jacobson expressed disap-
pointment that religious
Jews would be involved in
alleged terrorist activities.
In an interview with JTA
aboard the plane carrying
the Jewish National Fund
National Leadership Coun-
cil Mission to the dedication
of the Timna Park near
Eilat, Mrs. Jacobson re-
ferred to the Jewish under-
ground as "a very sad chap-
ter." She said she was espe-
cially disappointed with the
fact tha religious leaders in
Israel have not spoken out
against this phenomenon.
Mrs.
Jacobson
is
president of the JNF.
In a related development,
remarks by Meir Cohen-
Avidov, the deputy speaker
of the Knesset, condoning
violence against Arabs who
attack Jews, triggered on
angry public reaction and
demands for dismissal of•the
Likud MK.
Cohen-Avidov spoke at
an emotionally charged
rally of West Bank settlers
in solidarity with the sus-
pected members of a Jewish
underground terrorist
organization who were in-
dicted for criminal offenses
against Arab civilians.
Premier Yitzhak Shamir
strongly condemned the
purported Jewish terrorist
underground.
