LISTENING POST

DANNY RASKIN

DAVID HERMELIN is
getting a reputation as the
new local toastmaster gen-
eral . , . Latest affair for
Dave's wittiness and warm-
ing remarks was recent
Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion second annual dinner
in Renaissance Ballroom of
downtown Detroit's Westin
Hotel.
This remarkable organ-
ization headed by Dr.
Michael J. Brennan has
made, giant strides in the
field of cancer research .. .
Sixth Meyer and Anna Pre-
ntis Award was given to Dr.
Vincent T. De Vita Jr., di-
rector of the National
Cancer Institute, for his
breakthrough efforts.
Johnny Trudell's or-
chestra was as usual par ex-
cellente.
While Dave was talking
(he's a chairman of MCF
Development Committee),
gent at nearby table asked if
he had on a skull cap . . . and
told by his companion that
it was a cute bald spot.
The Michigan Cancer
Foundation is a very
highly-regarded organiza-
tion which does magnificent
work that is not unnoticed.
CONGRATS ... to Sol-
omon and Mary Granadier
. . . on their 60th anniver-
sary.
Sixty years of marriage is
certainly worth celebrating
. . . and Chuck Soberman of
Mercury Paint honored his
grandparents with a brunch
for about 80 people recently
in his and wife Linda's home
. . . It was given jointly by
Solomon and Mary's grand-
children and their spouses
. . . Roger and Marcia Fen-
ton, Dr. Larry and Nancy
Goldman, Charles and
Linda, Dr. Robert
Granadier, Larry Soberman
and Reva Soberman.

If that Soberman name
sounds familiar . . . it was
back in 1919 that two house
painters of five years
partnership, Jacob Sober-
man, Chuck's grandfather
on his father's side, and Max
Milgrom, borrowed to open
their small paint and
wallpaper store on Hastings
Street.
By 1925, a piece of farm
land on 12th St. between
Blaine and Pingree became
site of their growing Sober-
man & Milgrom store .. .
Still more growth . . . with
factory branch stores
opened on Livernois in 1938
and on East Warren in 1940
... In the meantime, Max
was only 39 years old when
he passed on, and the War-
ren store had closed.

good enough for Henry
Ford," said Nathan, "it's
good enough for me" .. .
And so the title of Mercury
Paint was born.
It was still Soberman &
Milgrom until 1959 . . . The
name Mercury Paint had
caught on so much, though,
that's what it became .. .
and still is . . . Jacob and
Max can be proud of the
generations carrying on
what they started . . .
Nathan, Chuck, Myron
Milgrom, Louis Milgroni
and Paula Milgrom . . .
Mercury paints are a great
tribute to the two immig-
rant house painters.

REASON FOR THAT
extra glow on face of Jan
Gitlin, owner at
Boardwalk's Peanuts, Or-
chard Lake Rd. and Maple,
is graduation from college of
her two sons . . . Scott cap 'n
gowns from University of
Michigan Medical School
. . . with internal medicine
residency at University
Hospital, Ann Arbor . . .
Blake diplomas from
Michigan State University
with a bachelor's degree in
marketing.

CONGRATS ... to Fred
Stein . . . and son Dr. Dan
Allan Stein . . . on their
birthdays . . . the same day
... today.

35TH ANNIVERSARY
celebration of Beth Hayeled
Nursery School and Kin-
dergarten at Shaarey Zedek
is June 8 in SZ Social Hall
. . . with dinner and services
. . . Everybody invited,
especially alumni and rela-
tives . . . Call Rosaline Gil-
son, Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
357-5544. School was
started by late Rabbi Morris
Adler.

CONGRATS ... to Ethel
and Abe Cherow . . . on their
50th anniversary.
MAJOR EXHIBITION
featuring new work by
Detroit-born Sydney Cash
continues through tomor-
row at Heller Galleries on
Madison Ave., New York.

Much of the new work
integrates welded steel with
glass constructions . . . On
display at the Corning
Museum of Glass, is
"Aleph," a six-and-a-half
foot 'glass tetra-obelisk
structure within a
structure.

A few of his recent
sculptures have had a kab-
balistic motif . . . One of
them is in the New York
show . . . He uses Jewish
symbols and Hebrew letters
in them . . . Sydney is pre-
generation sently working on a piece
Second
entered the business in for a West Coast synagogue.
His parents, Bernice and
1946 when Louis Milgrom
and Nathan Soberman Sam Cash, now of Los
joined the company . . . Angeles, formerly lived in
Soberman and Milgrom had Oak Park.
HELLO from Gerry and
gone from dealers to man-
ufacturers . . . Big problem, Pauline Gorman ... in town
though, was laming the recently for their annual
new product . . . This is short stay . . . from Boca Ra-
where Chuck's dad came in ton, Fla. . . . They've lived
. "If the name Mercury is there five years already.
