`Hatikvah' petition
"Hatikvah" petitions
were, circulated and over
200 names were collected at
the Israel Independence
Day celebration at the
Jewish Center on May 20. It
is generally not known, but
"Hatikvah" is not the na-
tional anthem of Israel even
though it has been sung by
the Jewish people for gen-
erations.
When brought in a recent
session of the Knesset for
the purpose of being pro-
claimed the official national
anthem, the Arabs and
their Communist suppor-
ters in the Knesset said that
the song "offended" them.
The matter was tabled for
further discussion at a later
date.
The Jewish Idea and the
Committee, for Hatikvah
finds this situation out-
rageous and offensive. We
offer these petitions to any
group or individual who
wishes to help have them
filled out. They will then be
forwarded to New York and
from there to Jerusalem.
This backsliding of Jewish
pride must stop.

When I first attended
meetings concerning the
construction and develop-
ment of the Holocaust
Memorial Center I was de-
eply moved.
I felt that it was an excel-
lent idea, since many people
of today, even "organized
groups, are trying to distort
history by denying the
existence of the Holocaust.
I also felt that we the
Holocaust survivors owe it
to all those who perished in
the Holocaust to counteract
such distorted propaganda,
by collecting first-hand in-
formation about the mag-
nitude of the Holocaust, for
present and future genera-
tions to examine.

However, I feel that some
aspects of the fund-raising
campaign initiated by the
organizers are at odds with
the original purpose of the
center.
Under their adopted
policies, anyone making a
contribution of $5,000 or
more to the construction of
the Holocaust Memorial
Center will have their rela-
tives' names (who perished
in the Holocaust) inscribed
on a plaque. Those making a
lesser contribution will not
have their relatives' names
inscribed.
Such policies are un-
democratic. It discriminates
against all those who
perished in the Holocaust
and have no rich living rela-
tives.
I realize that an induce-
ment had to be offered to
encourage contributions.
However, such inducements
should have been limited
the inscribing of the names
of the contributors only.
A selective listing of the
victims on the basis of
money contributed is more
appropriate for a
mausoleum than for this
memorial center.
