Detroiters aid
dig at Caesarea
synagogue site

With the generous assis-
tance of several members of
the Detroit Jewish commu-
nity, a team of archeologists
will begin the preservation
of the synagogue site at
Caesarea Maritima in Is-
rael this summer. •
Among the members of
the team will be Norma
Goldman from the Greek
and Latin Department at
Wayne State University,
returning for a second sea-
son at Caesarea. The funds
donated by the Detroit
patrons will help send stu-
dent archeologist John
Barth of Oakland Univer-
sity to Caesarea. Barth
previously directed the ex-
cavation at the corner of
Franklin and Fourteen Mile
roads in Franklin Village,
which uncovered the re-
mains of a 100-year-old
dwelling.

Daily 8:00 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun., 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. ,

In Caesarea, Barth will
be helping to uncover the
foundations and walls of
other structures that will
place the synagogue walls
from 2,000-1,500 years ago
on the city plan of Caesarea.

The synagogue site at
Caesarea was first partially
excavated by Israeli ar-
cheologist Avi-Yonah under
the aegis of Hebrew Univer-
sity in 1956. No further
work was undertaken and
the site was abandoned.

An architect, Goldman
and Barth will attempt to
align the structure onto the
city plan of Caesarea, which
Herod laid out in a grid of
north-south, east-west
roads intersecting at right
angles, The synagogue is lo-
cated north of the Crusader
fortress at Caesarea, on the
highest promontory of land
in the city, right at the sea.

Several mosaic inscrip-
tions mention the donors
and one refers to a tric-
linium or dining area, fur-
ther substantiating the site
as a synagogue. The team
will first trench along the
walls in order to uncover the
street on which the
synagogue was located and
any adjacent structures
that may help to clarify the

team. Mrs. Moss had ac-
